Is there any other way to determine one way or another (with the info at hand) whether this is a Sandman or not? Would knowing the chasis number be of any help in putting the clues together?
No way to tell from a chassis number unless you can find the details of it on the micro fiche from Holden... good luck with that....
It is looking more like a Sandman than not but I would like to see a pic of the body plate to see what the trim and paint codes are.
I would say it probably is a Sandman and if you restored it as one then no one can really say it isn't one as it has all the Sandman identifiers, it would still be worth around $25000 to $30000 fully restored.

Will get a pic on here of the body plate, in regards to picking up a second hand bracket I think that would be pretty difficult as people dont seem to be wrecking any vans but wanting silly prices for so called easy restorations but will keep my eye out, I actually went into my local holden dealer yesterday to pick their brain but they werent able to shed any further light on it, on the bright side they did let me borrow their 5-6 inch thick manual on the HJ holden series, I tried to locate the bracket in question as an item number but the book does not show the bracket in any detail what so ever that I could see. Do you think a metal fabricator could pretty much replicate the original item from photos.
Give Greg a call at Classic Oz Wreck, he is wrecking the HJ Sandman pictured below and it probably still has the rear hoodlining bracket on it.
