i dont know if im getting lost in this conversation but here goes! a while ago i sent through all my sandmans and maybe also monaros details to monaroparts.com , one of these was my saddle hz van, is this the one you have listed or is mine another? so any way is saddle and bordeaux rare or not so?

That would be me. Monaro and SS details were sent on to Ben Stewart for the MOnaro Register. And that van would be yours. Most HX Overlanders were Sandmans!

the van is need of restoration, it still is in its original paint and stipes, just rusty and faded. of all my sandmans the only one done is a L31 M21 mandarine HX ute. it is still matching numbers but original engine i rebuilt to L34 specs including heads, runs 355 sals lsd and the M21. Nice cruiser

Is this the only one known in saddle? was it rare in its day or just not around anymore? I cant remember seeing any before.

That is the only Sandman van I have recorded in that colour, so I guess that makes it "scarce" today, but I can't answer the question about how rare it was or wasn't in it's day. Being L31 M41 (or any auto for that matter) makes it pretty rare in Sandman full stop. Outside of GTS, LS, Premiers and Statesmans M41 was pretty scarce in any HJ-HZ, especially commercial vehicles. Even HJ-HZ Premiers are scarce in L31 M41 guise.

Last count it was getting close to 400. Just send me the chassis number or VIN number and i'll tell you if I have them recorded, or if I have partial ID already. If you have non-Sandmans (especially those with original engine) I record those too, primarily to fill in info gaps. Either by chance or that is how they were built, I have big clumps of numbers of Sandmans and then gaps in the ID, so the non-Sandmans can help to assess Sandmans that fall into those gaps (looking for non-matching ID plates, faked plates etc when people ask me about what they have found).

mate id still be keen on a pic or two of your saddle tan van. This is my saddle tan hz sandman ute before I resprayed it. I love the colour now and wish I did not change it. But its hard to say ah I will respray it back original after spending about 30k on it.... (its blue now)
