I know, but you couldn't order retractables on HQ commercials. Was not available until 1/1/75 in HJ.

Will be interested to see what Byron can add to this one as well as the console lid etc. The dash is fishscale but not chrome, I think the finish was called gunmetal - a grey/black type finish, dash also has the clock in case that indicates anything different.

Also in terms of the seat belts in they used to have black plastic covers over the buckles but these disintergrated years ago.
HQ Belmont XX7, and from what I can tell HJ HOLDEN XX7 up until 1/7/75 had floor mats. If carpet was optioned it was dealer fitted. In HJ, carpet was mandatory with buckets except it would appear on XX7.

That ute is a Kingswood so why doesn't it have carpet?? The Dash fascia is GTS chrome with translucent paint over as you can see where the paint has worn showing the chrome finish underneath and yet the console lid is the black Kingswood one???
Engine decal is incorrect for a HQ??? One owner completely original???? It has had more done to it than just a paint job I think...

Be wary of using restored cars to gauge what is correct for yours.... or even survivors for that matter as parts get changed over a 30 to 40 year period.

Take this restored HQ GTS Monaro also on Shannons......

    http://www.shannons.com.au/pages/auc...YUC5FL27&num=3

It also has a black lid Kingswood console when it should be GTS chrome fishscale...

Does anyone have a 74 parts catalogue they can check on to see how many floor shift type 4 fascia styles are listed????

HQ Kingswood didn't have carpet either, that is HJ.

    5/77 Catalogue:
2815985 is HOLDEN, Belmont, Kingswood, Monaro (exc LS) manual and Belmont, Kingswood Monaro T-bar.
2815986 is Column auto HOLDEN, Belmont, Kingswood, Monaro (exc LS).

2815985 also listed for manual and T-bar Premier, Statesman and LS Type 4 and 5.

2817793 is Column auto Premier, Statesman and LS Type 4 and 5.

    11/71 Catalogue:

Same except 2820159 for manual and T-bar Premier, Statesman and LS Type 4 and 5.

So that means 2820159 was NLA in 1977 so superceded to 2815985. Meaning there were only the two fascias for floor shift and 3spd column Type 4 dashes, ie normal 2815985 and Woodgrain 2820159. Plus the same things in column shift auto, meaning 4 x dashes in total.

    Thanks Byron,

So there is no such thing as a factory black natural finish sports fascia... type 4.

    1) chrome fishscale????
    2) chrome fishscale with translucent paint.... no change to part No. ????
    3) woodgrain finish

There are three console lid and shifter surround finishes..
    1) chrome fishscale
    2) Chrome fishscale with textured vinyl covered metal insert panels
    3) chrome fishscale with woodgrained black plastic insert panels.

    Group 15.292 and 15.293
Chrome fishscale is listed as GTS and SS only. Is this the same as your 77 catalogue or is there maybe a Sandman reference.

I would like to confirm which is correct for a Sandman as it appears from the catalogues the black insert ones are. The Sandman brochure shows fishscale but it could be they used a photo of the GTS 4sp shifter and console.

Also interesting which I hadn't noticed before.... the console, lid and shifter surrounds are listed for body style 35, 37 and 69 only. So according to my Oct. 73 catalogue consoles weren't available in Commercials.

It would appear that way. As far as I know none or only very early had the shiny chrome finish, and this was quickly changed so part number wouldn't change and no spare parts of it would be sold. This makes sense too as this is how early HJ were ie all other models used same fascia as GTS, even Premier and LS in HJ.

I've actually got what I think is a late HJ or HX black fascia here somewhere, I should get you to repair it and keep it for reference. Would be good to get a whole set of pictures together of all types. I have a NOS SL/E one here, which could be used for LE example too. The silver HJ dash in my Premier is perfect. Do others have perfect examples of the rest?

    15.292 lists LID ASSEMBLY:

2816801 Belmont, Kingswood and Monaro exc SS and XV4/XW8
2816805 Prem, Statesman & LS plus GTS and SS although I suspect there is some superceding going on here as SS/XV4/XW8 listed on a different line to GTS and Prem/LS/Statesman different line again.

Yep, above has superceding going on. 11/71 15.292 shows:

    2816801 Kingswood and Monaro
    2816800 Prem, Statesman & LS
    2816805 GTS.

The only mention of Sandman is in 15.293 COVER - Ash tray aperture 2829910. Same p/n as Prem and Statesman when ashtray in armrest, and also 4 door GTS with power windows. I suspect there is superceding here too, need a 1974 cattledog to check Sandman out.

11/71 15.293 shows the same breakup as for 15.292:

2817277 - Cover manual console Kingswood and Monaro
2816964 - Cover manual console Premier, LS, Deville
2816965 - Cover manual console GTS

Spot on. Keep it a secret!

I am fairly confident the chrome dash was used in early 71 GTS, I have seen an early brochure that the fascia is bright chrome. There is also the fact that the Torana GTX prototype had a bright chrome fishscale dash fascia.

Easy to tell which model it is. HJ fascia will either have the blanking piece intact over the left vent hole or there will be evidence of it being cut out for forced air ventilation. IE saw marks around the edges. HX fascia's were moulded with an open vent hole so will have a factory moulded appearance. Happy to repair yours for you, what does it need repaired?

Makes sense. The same chrome lid and auto shifter surround was used through to HZ so were still readily available. HJ to HZ had the black metal insert panels so they too were carry on from HQ. HJ to HZ used a different pattern woodgrain so wouldn't match HQ Premier, LS or Statesman. HJ used the same shifter surrounds as HQ so were most likely still available in 77 also.

    Hi All,
Just came across this thread, and noticed some comments about HQ GTS dashes and console lids and I felt I had to make a comment.
Over the years I have seen numerous restored and unrestored HQ's (and owned a few) and I am yet to see a 'chrome' finish facia or console lid that is original to the car.
The only 'chrome' finish ones I have seen are new reproductions, or where the finish has been worn away (especially console lids).
Even all the media from the day that I have seen shows the darker finish.
Back in the 80's I even deliberately removed the finish of one to reveal the silver finish beneath (thought it would look better) - so I'm sure others probably did the same. Prior to me doing this it was quite worn in places and did have the look that someone had painted over the 'chrome' finish - although thats just the way it looks when it wears.

I guess the question is why are people so convinced the 'chrome' is correct when all evidence suggests otherwise?

P.S. The HQ GTS below looks correct to me.

    Hi Fred,

    Nice to hear from you.

I think it goes something like the early HQ models had a bright finish. Late in '73 the ADR's changed and the bright finishes were painted in a non-reflective manner. The Sandman's and GTS/4 models would have this finish in '74.

If that coupe is correct the blackouts on the bonnet are a later change in the GTS range as well I think. Im not sure about the fonts on the guages but the speedo has an after-market sticker instead of the true 140mph\220kmh speedo. Unsure as to the retractable seat belt, large hole console on a coupe as well. The orange indicators and the air filter having the bit on the snout are later as well.

I'm sure OZBox on this site would give you a much better explanation as to the exact times the change happened. He knows HQ details extensively.

fred, that pic isnt brilliant but to me it looks like the correct fishscale lid on the console..

as for the silver/chrome fascias...when i was involved in the extensive research that went into the reproduction hq gts fascias we could not 100% find proof that they existed, but we did find pictures that showed them but these were not backed up with part number changes..
we spoke to all the old guys and true experts and the best we came up with was that the silver fascia could not be ruled out as being there in very early models..first couple of months in hq 1971 models..
it was the public that wanted the silver/chrome fascias because they believed it was right..needless to say they were done and thats the story...
one thing that was found was that early gts fascias had a grey transluscent paint over the chrome scales and then was changed to a green tinge over the chrome.
as for adr changes in paints for non reflective surfaces we could not 100% pin that one down to a date but conclude it was again in 1971.
