1878 is Chrome yellow, this is the GMH colour code for exterior paint.

If screws go int the floor and there has never been a front bracket it is looking like not being a Sandman.

Finally found it in the shed. It is black, has the centre vent moulded and idiot lights say PARK BRAKE and a blue high beam symbol. So looks like a HX one. Clock is still in place and is a white needle with a blue hand. Has radio cutout, holes drilled for 3 x switches where HZ RTS badge would be and a raised RTS badge under the idiot lights. I think it also has a side/lower tab broken also and HQ Kingswood badge added however it is on the intermittent wiper blank plate. Looks pretty good otherwise. Probably would be good to repair but it really only belongs to HX Belmont, HOLDEN or Kingswood except Sandman. Most likely from a Country pack Kingswood, Ambulance van or ute. Are the silver painted ones the same except for the paint? As it is obviously from a forced air HX it most likely is Kingswood I suppose.

Byron, the blue high beam idiot light makes it a HJ dash. Interesting that the centre vent hole is moulded.... all the HJ fascia's I have either have the infill panel or signs of it being cut out??? It may be a late HJ change but there should be a part No. change if this were the case. I'll look throught the catalogue listings again when I get a chance.

The blue high beam light identifies HJ unless the idiot lights have been changed, they are missing in a couple of my fascia's.

OK, must be late HJ HOLDEN, Belmont or Kingswood. Probably HJ Kingswood to have forced air, but it isn't cutout from what I can tell. I'll look closer at it. I've been trying to remember where it came from, and from memory I think it was off my old HJ Kingswood ute which had a factory type 5 dash, it was a later HJ. I must have changed fascias at some stage, probably because of the holes - hassle is it has 3 x holes drilled on the textured section where an RTS badge would be on a HZ, the other damage is on a smooth section (radio cutout). Not sure if that textured bit is the same as a normal HJ-X dash and the whole bit could be plastic welded into this fascia. I'll see if it has a number on the fascia.
I also found the HZ SL/E burr walnut fascia whilst I was looking for it. It is mickey mouse, not even damaged as it had a factory radio. Still has the chrome on edge, and the clock is spot on. Instruments are floating around the shed somewhere too, but they are not from the SL/E but from an old HZ BO6 tonner I used to own. The HJ instruments of the fascia mentioned above are probably stashed somewhere too, I thought I'd found them when searching for the fascia but it was only an LH SLR dash from the SLR5000 I pulled apart a while back.

the dash in that 350 is black and the console is the open inertia type..that particular car is not a good example to look at for originality regardless what the add says..:errf:

That is identical look to the fascia I bought back around 1982 from Holden dealer in WA. The fascia I replaced was the same but obviously faded and worn in parts like I have seen in many photos. As the ute I had was owned by family members since at least early 1979, when the ute was only 5 years old, I would have to assume that fascia was original as it would seem unlikely it would have been replaced so soon.

    Hi All,
Just came across this thread, and noticed some comments about HQ GTS dashes and console lids and I felt I had to make a comment.
Over the years I have seen numerous restored and unrestored HQ's (and owned a few) and I am yet to see a 'chrome' finish facia or console lid that is original to the car.
The only 'chrome' finish ones I have seen are new reproductions, or where the finish has been worn away (especially console lids).
Even all the media from the day that I have seen shows the darker finish.
Back in the 80's I even deliberately removed the finish of one to reveal the silver finish beneath (thought it would look better) - so I'm sure others probably did the same. Prior to me doing this it was quite worn in places and did have the look that someone had painted over the 'chrome' finish - although thats just the way it looks when it wears.

I guess the question is why are people so convinced the 'chrome' is correct when all evidence suggests otherwise?

P.S. The HQ GTS below looks correct to me.

[Be wary of using restored cars to gauge what is correct for yours.... or even survivors for that matter as parts get changed over a 30 to 40 year period.

Take this restored HQ GTS Monaro also on Shannons......

    http://www.shannons.com.au/pages/auc...YUC5FL27&num=3

It also has a black lid Kingswood console when it should be GTS chrome fishscale...

Does anyone have a 74 parts catalogue they can check on to see how many floor shift type 4 fascia styles are listed????[/QUOTE]

    Hi Fred,

    Nice to hear from you.

I think it goes something like the early HQ models had a bright finish. Late in '73 the ADR's changed and the bright finishes were painted in a non-reflective manner. The Sandman's and GTS/4 models would have this finish in '74.

If that coupe is correct the blackouts on the bonnet are a later change in the GTS range as well I think. Im not sure about the fonts on the guages but the speedo has an after-market sticker instead of the true 140mph\220kmh speedo. Unsure as to the retractable seat belt, large hole console on a coupe as well. The orange indicators and the air filter having the bit on the snout are later as well.

I'm sure OZBox on this site would give you a much better explanation as to the exact times the change happened. He knows HQ details extensively.

fred, that pic isnt brilliant but to me it looks like the correct fishscale lid on the console..

as for the silver/chrome fascias...when i was involved in the extensive research that went into the reproduction hq gts fascias we could not 100% find proof that they existed, but we did find pictures that showed them but these were not backed up with part number changes..
we spoke to all the old guys and true experts and the best we came up with was that the silver fascia could not be ruled out as being there in very early models..first couple of months in hq 1971 models..
it was the public that wanted the silver/chrome fascias because they believed it was right..needless to say they were done and thats the story...
one thing that was found was that early gts fascias had a grey transluscent paint over the chrome scales and then was changed to a green tinge over the chrome.
as for adr changes in paints for non reflective surfaces we could not 100% pin that one down to a date but conclude it was again in 1971.
