What are the chances the dealer took a new wheel down to the local tyre shop and put a tyre on it?

as the tyre isnt off my HQ i would be happy to see it sit in a sandman where it belongs

I just looked up the tyre options on HJ. There are 2 x tyre codes for a ZX radial: QRR and QRA. QRR has load range ML, QRA load range HL. QRR wasn't available on any commercial vehicles, but QRA was available for utes & vans.

QRA suits the following in HJ (QRR is basically the same but not on utes or vans):

    Belmont 6cyl sedan & wagon
    Kingswood 6cyl sedan & wagon
    HOLDEN 6cyl van and ute
    Kingswood 6cyl ute
    Premier 6cyl sedan and wagon
    LS 6cyl
    Statesman Deville
Belmont V8 sedan & wagon (except Belmont sedan with 308 and twin exhaust)
Kingswood V8 sedan & wagon (except Kingswood sedan with 308 and twin exhaust)
Premier V8 sedan & wagon (except Premier sedan with 308 and twin exhaust)
LS V8 (except 308 with twin exhaust)
    HOLDEN V8 van and ute
    Kingswood V8 ute

Unfortunately it doesn't suit GTS (in HJ anyway). This should be the same/similar for HQ and HX. When XX7 10cwt was introduced later in HJ it is quite possible the QRR tyre became available also on XX7 and XU4 so it could be that too.

These are not the base tyre for utes and vans though.

I'll have a look tonight but i'm pretty sure my HJ Premier had Michelin ZX when new as it was ordered with 6" rims but it only had single exhaust. I'm pretty sure the spare is still in the boot. I have a feeling it may have been QRR though as QRR is the sedan tyre. Can you have a look at it and see, if it turns out to be a QRR tyre i'll be real interested, primarily as I am about to put GTS rims on the Premier and this would include a spare. Would be nice to put an original, untouched spare tyre on the spare wheel!

Byron there is no mention of QRR or QRA or load range HL or ML... all it says is max load 1540lbs at 40psi

i am posting some photos now

Also the part number on the inside of the rim is M50663 if that helps any

    Guys

I did some research and talked to Al and it looks like the story on that rim and tyre is probably right - ie it was most likely ordered as a spare for a commercial vehicle fitted with Michelin 185SR14ZX tyres (ie tyre option code QRA) and N66 rims. That tyre Al has is load rated tyre from what I can tell (1540lb is 700kg). So it would correctly suit an early HJ Sandman or later XU3 ordered with these tyres, which would be fairly rare as most would have had F78L14 (6cyl) or F78S14 (V8) as standard. Later HJ/X XX7 would have got QRR if ordered with Michelin ZX tyres. After talking with Al we agreed it would be best to go onto a Sandman that had these tyres from new (if such a beast still exists). It'd have to be a spare on a fairly static car as it shouldn't really be used for road use (rubber older than 10 years is not recommended to be used on-road). If no-one wants to buy it I offered to buy it from Al as a spare for my Premier as it had Michelin ZX tyres new, and it is currently being changed to GTS rims (they look fantastic with the Sepia metallic and Premier bling!).

As Byron has said i picked up this rim and tyre to go in the boot of my coupe.... but as the tyre is for a sandman (insert disclaimer here) i am happy for them to sit where they are supposed to...

so if you are doing a concours or factory authentic resto and would like to add that finishing touch to your sandman then pm me.... would prefer to swap some gear so tell me what youve got to swap....

    cheers Al
