It'd be dealer fitted. Probably a Papaya HX van? Unless it was a GMH TEST VEHICLE, then it may have been done in Engineering or done for display.

You could order the same options that were available on the base vehicle (HOLDEN ute and van for HX) except where a higher option level was already fitted eg you couldn't go back to bench seat or column shift or black (19V) trim. Some normal options were not available because of the package eg vinyl floor covering.
The standard Sandman package in HX was XU3, or you could order the alternative XX7. On either of these the only Sandman specific option available was DL7 (delete stripes). There was one other option available and that is the option to have the engine size badge fitted to the tailgate however this didn't have an option code. The standard XU3 and XX7 packages had this badge deleted, so if you bought one off the lot and didn't order it, most likely the badge would have been absent.

cheers for the info Raz and HK... just trying to decide whether or not to take my GTS guards off before the big re-spray. They are relatively rust and bog free. As long as its possible that the car was delivered with them i think ill leave them

    thanks again!

GTS guards on HX/HZ Sandman were not optional and no HX/HZ Sandman would have been delivered with them from the factory. If fact GTS guards were not optional on any model Holden, they came standard on HT/G/Q/J/X/Z GTS, HQ SS, GTR and HQ/HJ Sandman only.

While it may have been possible to have a dealer fit them for you from spare parts it would be highly unlikely this would have occurred due to the high cost for the dealer to do so. I very much doubt any HX/HZ Sandman was dealer delivered with GTS guards, more likely owners had them fitted and painted by panel shops or fitted by the owners themselves when customising their car.

^^Absinth has just about nailed it. Just think of all the VT and VX's out there with VZ Monaro bonnets, and how many would have been dealer fitted. It is technically possible, but unlikely.

Absinth, although irrelevant to the discussion you missed two production vehicles also: HK GTS and HX LE.

If you do keep them then you wont be able to stick the little Sandman decals on the guards.

Have seen a few vans where they stick these decals just behind the front door windows instead.

Do what you want. Unless you are going for concours it won't affect anything even resale. If it was me i'd have the GTS guards and leave the stripes off, but leave the SANDMAN logo on the tailgate. Will look heaps nicer in my eyes, but it is your van so do as you please!

they never look as good behind the front doors. Just looses the cool HX/HZ stripe appeal!

yeah im def leaning to your way of thinkin HK

i was gonna leave the stripes off the side anyhow (its got the best rear quarters ive EVER seen on a van!)

the stripes cover what are one of the best features of these beauties.. the curves
    .. thats my opinion

not a fan of the logo behind the door either

Stripes with gts guards never looks rite and the small sandman always looks out of place if its not where it is ment to go. i say if you going stripes put std guards on, no stripes gts guards are the go.

as most say your van do what you like! back in the panel van golden day it was all about custom changes and how far you can modify it. look at all the van nats show winners for the last 30 plus year not a stock one yet.
