To pool or not to pool

For the past 18 months the wife and I have been thinking about putting a pool in the backyard (in ground). We have two boys (10 & 11) and it will definitely be an over capitalisation of the current value I'd like to hear from others who have had a similar discussion.

I hear two sides from pool owners, they either love them or think they are a burden, what are your thoughts?

*** not to be taken as advice

Take it from the numbers man - DONT DO IT!

ahahah mate sounds as though your aware of the overcap. Typically a run of the mill pool in a 'median - circa $450K' suburb might add $10-$20K. By the time your all said and done i reckon it'll cost you $25-30K. From talking to friends and family that have them they are good for kids but a curse for the bloke paying to run it and spend his days cleaning and maintaining!

I think a pool takes up the same amount of space as a double garage, so instead of a pool and a double garage I'm getting a 4 car garage. May still go with an outdoor spa though. Parents in Law have one and it's a nice place to relax.

That's about it. Your spending all that money so your kids friends can cool off in summer. Don't forget that you will then end up feeding most of the little bastards and your fridge will be perpetually empty. Cheaper to send your kids to the public pool with 5 bucks for an icecream.

I HATED my inground pool, and I didn't pay for it (I bought the house with it). It was the bane of my existence, forever cleaning the damn thing. If there are trees withing 2 x houses don't do it. They cost a fortune and limit the selling audience for your house when you sell it. The only one i'd ever have now is an indoor pool.

We put in a pool 10 years ago when we built our house, the kids were young and used it a lot..all the families got in it when it was Xmas, and it was a major part of our backyard and didn't need mowing. Like everything garden and house, I did all the PH testing and making sure it was clean..after 8 years of being sick of leaves, we put a roof over the whole thing, and it is clean and shady so you can go in it without getting burned. Creepy crawly and self cleaning salt cell, and keeping up the water level by having it plumbed into the pool via the filter..(ask me about this in a PM if you need to) via the automatic watering system...
If you want hours of entertainment for your kids do it now, if you want a maintenance free pool go salt, and go fibreglass. Rodney and I sit in it in the summer months with a drink, and it is totally relaxing...(it can be 45degrees here at times)

Playwme I agree but I would rather have my kids where I could see them and their friends here where I know what they are up to...

Even last xmas we were up one end of the pool having family drinks, and our 22yr old son had all his mates, plus one with a baby, up the other end with their beers, and chips etc. so it is a very social part of our family....

As Jennie said she looks after the pool but the roof over it is good and it is solar heated because we like to spend time in the pool when it about 28 to 30 degrees .the filter pump and the solar pump will increase your power bills

Our house came with the pool and I never really minded having it because the kids loved it when they were young. But once they got to the age of about 15/16 they lost interest.

After the pool had not been used at all for about 16 months we decided the space could be better utilised.

This is how my pool looks now and I must say it is used by me almost every day/night and is so much more refreshing to be in than the old one.

Grew up with a backyard pool was great fun being able to cool down whenever you wanted day or night and also when my own kids were young was convient to take them to parents for a swim also, down side as already commented my Dad was always cleaning pool backyard surrounded by trees prob should have had a cover. Not sure if you live close to beach or local pool but only thing would probably be once they become attracted to the oppposite sex in bikinis, them and there mates are prob gunna give the backyard pool a miss for bigger and better things that you dont get to see in the backyard pool like white pointers etc... haha

pool yep, I would say yeah that take a bit to look after a stubby gets me round the pool, thats as long as it takes to clean it in the arvo, every 2nd day, in winter we leave it for chemicals leave it running it looks after it self, creepy crawly does all the cleaning all year round, i take water sample to shop and lady tells me what i need, not ne of these upmarket ones that tells you need polisher in the water etc, just acid, salt and clorine once in blue moon

I would say owner build too, we did it and saved over 10k easy we put that into the landscaping so you dont see the cash, i did a concrete pool, build it too what ever shape or design you wont, mines 10 x 5 rectangle, if i had my choice again i would only change one thing, build it so you have a shallow end at both ends and deep in middle like a gentle ( V) so you can dive in from both ends and playing volley ball etc is easy and kids can stand up both ends etc, we put a bench seat in the side again geat with concrete can free form anything you wont

COncrete mmmm love the feel of the pebbles on my toes,

Yes they can be pains in arse but I use mine hot day walk in home boardies on and dive in cool in seconds mow lawn dive in working on cars dive, feel hot and sweety in sumer watcing tv dive in, feeling kinky go nude, feeling naughty take missus in, kids love it, plenty of parties, and always good when you have parties and mates come over,

as for adding money didnt do it for that did it for cooling me, and having fun, i get more out of it then i put in

As jen said its nice to know where kids are , and if its hot they can walk out back door and dive in, not drive them miles to beach or lake, and hot by time we get home
