If it's not a genuine Sandman and you're going to have a rear interior you can cheat a bit. Get a window sized panel made up with recessed edges and glue it in using Panel glue from the inside. Tidy up with bog and paint. You can do it at home, it won't warp the panels, and bog over properly prepped metal should last you for years to come.

    What a sly idea.
That's a great way to do it.

You could still do it. Depends if you're wanting maximum resale from a perfectly restored Sandman or not. There's no issue with strength and it's a lot less risky than welding but it might not be what a potential Sandman buyer will like. Mind you, if it has a rear interior it's not going to be visible anyway.

Well thats up to you. If you are on a budget then you have to take short cuts. That is a pretty good way to get around the windows though.
You are better off with just an ordinary van in good condition body wise and modifying it as your budget allows. If you start on a complete genuine sandman restoration on a tight budget you will be at it for years before you can drive it.
You have fun collecting all the bits and pieces along the way and fitting them. Get one you can drive and worry about the rest at your leisure.
