that bubbling is too consistant to be bad rust..it looks to me as if it has had seam sealer run the full legth before it was painted and its mainly paint bubbling..which of course will have some rust under it but i dont think it will be as bad as it looks.

Clean rust free non-Sandman utes and vans are very common, compared to the same thing in collectable stuff like GTS coupes, L34/A9X/XU1 Torana etc. My point was you have little choice when repairing collectable stuff as you really need to keep the original body where possible. But clean garden variety vans and utes are everywhere on Ebay and relatively cheap. I've put up at least 4 x links of what appear to be near rust free vans and utes in the last month alone. Here is a few:

You just have to look inland!

nicky if i was buying it i would ask outright wethere i could take the inside panels off and have a look up at the seams..where that bubbling is below the join you should have an indication on the inside as it wont be hidden.

I agree with Greg on the rust free utes/vans. I bought one a while ago. It was rust free in all the right places..... until I got it home, when all this rust appeared in the plenum and B pillar. Must have rusted on the trailer on the way home.
The only rust free ute body west of Sydney I know of is my WB and my brothers WB. Have not seen another in 10 years. I know where there is one though, I just cant get time to get over and look at it.

I've seen plenty. Just ask Greg about the WB body I found a few years back and he sold for me. There is a rust free HQ ute shell at my mate's place near Tamworth (well it was there recently, may still be). Hainzy's van came from the same area too. The white HQ XX7 van shell I posted a picture up of in another thread was an Inverell car. I knew of a red WB Kingswood ute in Emmaville that sold very recently, 100% original paint and rust free. There are heaps out there, by no means common but not rare by any means. There are also heaps more in very good condition too, maybe minor floor or door rust but good in plenums. You just have to go looking for them. Often they are ugly and have dented and knocked around front panels, but are very sound and great rust wise. I saw a HJ van out west of Dubbo only 3-4 months ago for sale that was an awesome body too compared to all the coastal junk you see.

I know you can never tell 'til you look closely, but here are a few possibilities:

Oz, i gotta say over here in WA there really is no such thing as a rust free van. I bought a one owner HX that was garaged, low kms etc etc and it still had the usual cowl, rear 1/4, sill, door and fender rust. It had absolutely none in the roof and seams tho. (hope the pic works!)

Nick i reckon avoid the ones with rust in the seams and gutters if poss. Pretty hard to repair properly from what i understand.

I'm with Byron on this one. I trip over rust free Holdens down here. I keep buying them thinking "that'll be good for parts". Yet to get one that was bad enough to pull to bits so far.
If I had any money right now (stay at home dad for a bit) i'd be hooking the car trailer up to the truck and heading up to Batlow for those 2 Windowless vans on ebay.
