carpet 012.JPGcarpet 008.JPGcarpet 008.JPGcarpet 007.JPGWith all the debate on what carpet to buy I thought I would share with the good folks a few tricks and a method of doing fitted carpet old school.
If your scared of a measuring tape and a little work look away now .
First find some carpet you like and purchase 1.6 lineal meters. This is assuming the roll is 3.6m.
This will give enough to do the rear wall and floor of a ute with enough left over for some floor matts and extras .
A sheet of 6mm mdf is also required for the backing for the rear bulk head.
Measure and cut 2 pieces to fit against the rear wall from the window rubber to the floor, 2 pieces because the wall is not flat.
Allow about 15mm on each side for the carpet to fold around and so the wood is easy to fit in. then cover the boards with one piece of carpet use contact cement fold the edges around and staple for good measure.carpet 005.JPG.
Now measure and cut 2 pieces of carpet for the floors. They should be straight along the outside edge and I use 4 refrence points where the tunnel meets the floor. total length 1700mm x 720mm. So it narrows up in the footwell and widens out as it goes up the firewall.
When placed on the floor the carpet should go up the tunnel about half way. push into place and where it folds up in the corners pinch it into a pleat and cut the V out allowing enough to sew the v together. See photo.
Its upside down and on the opposite side to make it easier to mark out. Once you have 2 identical but opposite pieces in place measure and cut the piece for the middle.
Allow an extra 25mm on each side for the seam .
Now the hard part (asking wifey to sew the lot together on grannys old singer) Just joking . Sew it together with a bag needle and brickies line using blanket stitch.
I use an industrial sewing machine . Re fit and carefully cut reliefs for gearstick etc.
And there you have it.
