What is a XX7?

Probably a dumb question I know. What is the difference between them,and why do they seem more sort after?

Hi Sandman fans

A XX7 is stamped on the ID plate of a genuine Sandman built in Acacia Ridge Brisbane Queensland. Only Sandmans built in Acacia Ridge were stamped with the XX7 identification. It would be great if all the Sandmans built had the same, would make it easier to ID a Sandman built elsewhere.

XX7 is actually the option code used by Holden for the special vehicle package - Sandman 10cwt.

XU3 is the option code for special vehicle package - Sandman 14cwt.





As stated above the Acacia Ridge plant stamped the option codes for special vehicle packages on the body plate.

Is their any idea of knowing roughly the percentage of Sandmans that were produced with the XX7 & XU3 compared with the rest of the sandmans which are out there which are obviously a lot harder to positively id unless you know the complete history, sales receipt etc, I imagine even with all the sandman identifiers which are mention on this website you still cant be 100 percent certain it is a genuine sandman??

My 78 ute came fitted with ER70 tyre's,which would mean 10 cwt. If it was built in Sydney,would it be identical to a Brisbane built ute? I have no idea what was on it's plate's,although I kept my owner's certificate.

I wouldn't say they are more sort after, just more desirable in determining whether or not you’re Holden panel van is an official Sandman. If you know what features to look for as this site respectfully sets out, then finding an official Sandman without the XX7 stamped on the ID plate is in my opinion just as valuable as a stamped XX7 one. But if all Sandman’s we're stamped with the XX7 on the ID plate, it would make identifying one ALOT easer...! :D

I own an original one owner 1974 HJ Holden Sandman and even though it hasn't got the XX7 stamped on the ID plate, it does have all the features a HJ Sandman came out with at the time. I have the original books that came with it such as the owner’s manual etc, and the owner who it was bought from confirmed that he bought it as a Sandman from the factory. I just don't have the XX7 stamped on it since it's an Adelaide based Sandman.

But in my opinion an XX7 Sandman isn't worth more... But I'm sure there are guys out there that disagree... ;)

hj308, there is no way to tell what percentage of cars were Brisbane built compared to other States and Holden didn't keep records of numbers of special vehicles built. None that have been found anyway.

No matter what people say... proof of lineage does affect the value and the proof is in the sales figures. Non XX7 HJ Sandmans sell for less than non XX7 HX and HZ Sandmans with de-rated GVW's. XX7 stamped vehicles sell for more than non XX7 stamped vehicles unless they have Sandman specific trim codes or documented proof of being a genuine Sandman.

How much less a non XX7 stamped vehicle sells for has a lot to do with the quality of the restoration, the more original and genuine it looks the more you will get for it.

There were a lot of V8 console shift vans and utes built that were not Sandman's, after over 30yrs and multiple owners it is almost impossible to tell the difference between these and genuine Sandman's.

Absinth, for example with the HJ 308 windowless that belonged to Jez that recently sold on ebay and had all the identifiers and he was experienced enough to state he was 90 percent sure it was a sandman and I dont think their were any doubters, lets say it was stamped XX7 or XU3 how much more to you think that would have added to the value of a van in that condition. I know it can be hard to put an exact figure on because if people are desperate that will sometimes pay more that what they are worth but I am just curious as to what you thoughts are or anyone elses as to how much more they would have payed to be 100 percent sure as apposed to 90 percent. Are we talking $1000's more ??

Thats a bit like asking how long is a piece of string? It all depends on who is bidding if it is an auction.

IMO:
From what i've seen through Ebay, Car sales, Car point etc, your "Joe average" doubts it's a Sandman unless it has XX7 on the tags.
It's like they couldn't be bothered doing more investigating or think your trying to rip them off.
If it has XU3 or XU4 they seem to be very hesitant.
