Hi Guys,
I just got a van for a very reasonable price. There are a few problems with it though.





There is a gaping hole in the tunnel where the shifter comes though (celica 5 speed) & the short center console is not fixed in, how are they normally fixed?



The brake pedal also feels quite soft, it gets firmer if you give it a few pumps, but then wait and back to soft.. The brake fluid looks nice and new and there is plenty there, so that's the limit of my brake knowledge.

The Upper tailgate mechanism is stuffed and beyond repair ( I think) The spinning plate with the slotted holes is broken on one side and the plungers and their wire are bent to buggery. I think i could buy a new plate and find some plungers with the correct end clips and length and ill be in luck.

Are the plungers the same as ute ones? If some one could post a pic of how it should look that would be great.

The Tape player doesn't work which is a real bummer but ill address this soon.

If there is anyone in Adelaide with some better looking second hand carpet (that they don't want) i would be more than happy to buy it off them.
Also if anyone has a set of upper plungers.

The Handbrake is very loose (probably doesn't do anything) and the cable is adjusted all the way to tension. So the rear brake pads are over worn i guess?

I'll consult my Holden manual with changing rear brake pads and bleeding the lines.

New shoes in the rear and you may find you dont need to bleed the brakes. You have to back the brakes off on the rear and remove the drum. The rest is pretty easy to work out. Make sure you dont over flow the resevoir on the master cylinder as new shoes will push the slave cylinders in and so the fluid will be pushed back into the resevoir.
You probably need to check the drums are not worn out and give all the brake mechanism a good clean.
Check your book on how to back the brakes off. You can get a cheap tool to get to the adjuster more easily.

Brake bleeding will be easier with two people. One person pumps the brake pedal and then holds it depressed. The other mug gets to undo the bleed screw and let some fluid out then re tighten the bleed screw. Keep doing this until air bubbles stop coming out and new fluid appears. Keep the resovoir topped up. If you dont keep the pressure on the brake pedal until the bleed screw is tightened it will just suck air back into the system. Same goes if you let the resovoir get too low. Push a bit of hose over the bleed screw and catch the old fluid in a jar to save on mess and wash any spilt fluid off with water straight away. Throw the old fluid away.

You can get a one man setup to hook onto the bleed screw, but do it the manual way so you know exactly what is happening the first time you do it.

It all sounds like too much hassle for you. Sell it to me for $500 and I'll take the burden upon my shoulders. I'm good at helping out fellow community members that way.:Chin:

mook,ive got all the bits you need....also..the short centre console is mounted by 2 brackets which are both rear console brackets if it was a long one,get my drift?..you a chippy.attach 2 blocks of wood to tunnel via tech screws and then attach console to blocks of wood via wood crews...

the problem with this old skool bleeding is it generally screws the seal on the master cylinder because the car and its master are old..ok with a brand new master cyl...if you have a compressor then go and buy a self bleeder which is a pop to use with one person as wb said which i deleted..sorry james...
also when bleeding brakes..start at furthest wheel from the master cyl...which is left rear,then right rear,then left front,then right front..easy as..

Oh it is such a burden!

Its stored in a shed behind my dads office and i have already had offers for it. bloody nuts! I don't think that that ill have trouble selling when the time comes.


I changed the oil & Filter which was quite black and smelt burnt. I also had a look at the plugs they too were very black. Cleaned then and put them back in.

Runs very well while idling and starts very easily. I'll need to get out on the road to see how it goes.

So the next thing will to be to bleed the brakes and check the rear brake pads.
