Would be a beaty for someone to restore. Doesn't come much more desirable than that in a van, ie HJ in Tuxedo black with Chamois/Covert trim in L31 M41 GU7 guise. I'll bet it was LSD too originally. While i'm not a black car fan, it happily have that or a ute in the same build configuration. Good luck with the sale, hopefully someone does it some justice with aquality resto.

No, just means it is an auto 308. Rear headlining attachment points and console mean XX7 in this case.

Hey guys, I noticed the trim plate has Adelaide details (ie body number ending in A) yet the thin vin plate says sydney built H8. The sandman I'm restoring has the same and I always thought someone had dodgied something up there, but is this normal?

Hi Sandaro and welcome.

The VIN in this eBay add says it is a Sydney built Van (H8 - in the VIN).

I'll be corrected if wrong but the chassis & bodies were made at different plants and then paired up at final assembly. The order this happened in I am not clear on but others will be able to clarify.

Normal for Pagewood HJ-HZ vans. Pagewood didn't build its own van bodies for HJ-HZ, bodies were assembled, painted and BODY tag affixed. Then the car was completed on the Pagewood assembly line. Dandenong is the same. This is why these have Pagewood or Dandenong ADR and VIN tags and Elizabeth BODY plates. Late HT and HG are even stranger. These van bodies were built at Elizabeth and given BODY and ADR tags and chassis number. When assembled at Pagewood or Dandenong they got a VIN tag only from the assembly plant.

Thanks for clearing that up for me guys. What a strange way to put a car together. I wonder what the economic advantage was in that?

I always knew my car was a sandman, but just felt self conscious of what I thought was a dodgy tag that would detract from the car when finished. But obviously not, that puts me at ease on that issue.
