Love that Aquarius van above. One thing I did learn from restoring old holdens (still have a couple good EK's) is buy the car with the best body you can find/afford and be prepared to get it from a dryer climate such as mid NSW for us Vic guys etc. Running gear and interior not as important(my opinion). Every van I see around lately seem to have rust in the roof above to doors and rust in the seam above the quarters. I have found that vans that have been resprayed tend to rust more in that seam, dont know if its because water gets drawn up when it is getting wet n dried then it is sprayed over. Anyway, have any of you guys had good success getting rid of rust in these spots, sorry to ramble.

There is only one way to get rid of rust and ensure it won't come back and that is to completely cut it out and replace with good metal. Apply a good quality primer to all surfaces.

Unfortunately early Holden's were poorly primed on internal surfaces and area's such as sills and rear quarters tend to rust from the inside out. Sills in particular can appear solid until you get them back to bare metal and discover they are thin and pitted, they are notorious for rusting out from the inside.

Vans, particularly windowless with large metal surfaces can accumulate a lot of condensation which runs down to the lapped seam on the inside and makes its way into the joint. This also occurs on the roof seam as well. The best defence is prime and paint everywhere you can get to and then fish oil all seams and internal area's.

That was the second time it was listed on Ebay, the guy who out bid me and won it in mid 2007 was from Melbourne and kept it about 6 mths before listing it for sale again. Trying to make a quick buck with a reserve of over 11k..... it initially sold for around $8000, can't remember the exact amount.

I've been following Sandman's for quite a few years (Mainly utes) and have certainly seen prices creep up a little, but advertised versus selling price are two quite different things. I'm still convinced that anything over $25k is the exception rather than the rule.
When talking utes I'd agree with your values. Utes tend to be valued at around 1/3 less than vans for the same model.

Why do you guys keep quoting prices way above what anyone has said???? I don't recall anyone stating they are valued at $40k. We have stated that you can't buy a Sandman van and properly/correctly restore it for much less than $25k.

The value of a Sandman is reflected in the quality of the restoration..... if you have the wrong trim colour, wrong colour paint, incorrect engine or parts from an earlier or later model than the value drops. True collectors will pay top dollar for top cars only.

I too have followed Sandman prices over the years but they are hard to gauge an average price from as not many good correct restorations have come up for sale. Below are a few of the better ones.

HX Sandman van, Shannons auction Nov. 2005.... SOLD for $18000
has incorrect engine fitted, HJ GTS guards, HZ twin headlight front,
HZ mirrors, HJ Statesman grill and a few other incorrect items.

HX Sandman van, Shannons auction Nov. 2007... passed in at $25k to $30k, later SOLD for $23000
has HJ Prem front, incorrect engine and several incorrect trim items.

HJ Sandman van, Shannons auction Feb. 2008...passed in at $24k to $30k, later SOLD for $25000
has incorrect engine, HZ mirrors and several other incorrect items.

HZ Sandman van, SOLD for $38000 in approx. 2007. This van had original sales documents, all original
and correct parts and progress photo's of full bare metal restoration. This was an excellent and
very correct restoration and is reflected in it's sale price.

I saw the yellow HJ Sandman about 2 weeks ago at the Gold Coast when I went down there to get red bands put on my tyres. I'm far from an expert on these things but having owned muscle cars for the last 20 years for 25k being a genuine Sandman I reckon it's pretty much on the money. Only things that let it down was the sunroof, side windows & being on LPG. If you could screw them down to say 20K I reckon its a good buy.

    Cheers,
    Glenn.

    Funny these genuine sandman prices.....
I was on another forumn not that long ago trying to sell a genuine hj sandman for a friend ( i got too many)
She wanted $1200-, she got $200-.... You guys need too shop around a bit more, and not just look on evilbay (it only esculates the prices due to demand)
I bought my hz sandman van for $100- & i got a genuine everything ute lined up for around $1000-

You gotta look outside the box for these beauties.

Saw this HJ Sandy about 2 weeks ago when I was at the Gold Coast getting red bands put on my tyres. Didn't look too bad. Things that let it down were sunroof & LPG. If he's asking 25K & someone got it for say 20K I reckon it's not to bad a buy, but that's just my 2 cents worth.
