I did think of that, but i did have a mate pulling on the buckle to simulate. Maybe just need to fit it all back up and try.

without having one in my hands cant help you much more sorry. You dont need to push them inwards to lower though, they just go down, like a cheap hooker.
When you are winding the winch down I think the inside kind of it turns on a thread and winds back a bit and lessens the pressure on the teeth so they are not as tight but the teeth will still hold or with a little presure will let the tyre down(from menory)
