Absinth,
That is not what the NSW Road transport legislation says. Perhaps going from HQ to HZ brings in a different document for modified but for a straight chassis swap there is nothing mentioned anything like what he is claiming. Oz box has been ramming this down the throat of anyone who dares dispute his claims including our youngest and newest forum member while he was revelling in the joy of finding a Sandman. It is now time for him to produce the proof of his claims. Once he has done this I will agree with him, then he and I can team up on next newbie who pokes his head into this forum, saying he has a Sandman with a non matching chassis and tear him to bits.
im not ramming anything to anyone..except you.
as for disputing my claims i suggest you do some more reading in the correct areas..modified section isnt it coz it isnt modified..pick up a phone and speak to someone like a blue slip registration human and see what they say?
i dont need to produce what i know to be legal as ive been doing cars for 30 years legally buying/selling/dismantling so ive come across it before..
just wondering 2t..why are you so adamant that the chassis number is not the identity?
what else can it be?
We have a section for Replica Sandman's as well. It can always go in there if the chassis isn't right. What I'm saying is , build it for yourself to enjoy. It all gets a bit serious otherwise. Given this kids skills with welding (and if he does a painting course he'll no doubt be good at that too) he should be able to restore this thing for a very reasonable price, and to him it can still be a Sandman. Don't worry about what some nupty anal retentive collector will give you for it when it's done.
I've got a HQ coupe sitting in the old house at the farm. It doesn't have it's original chassis. Not sure why but apparently the chassis under it is from a HQ Statesman. Legally that may make the car a HQ Statesman (not sure how far the RTA would go with that and whether they have that chassis no listed as a HQ stato) but it's still a Monaro to me and that's how I'll enjoy it.
Yes Ag's it would be a non matching numbers HZ Sandman...... the HZ Sandman bit is the key though... with a police number on the chassis it retains it's data plate ID.... HZ Sandman..... sure it won't be as valuable as a Sandman with it's original matching number chassis but it will be far more valuable then if it was registered as a HQ... :Chin:
As I said, no different than decking an engine block and shaving off the engine number. I use a 4" disc sander all the time to clean the paint off my chassis while restoring... doesn't take much to accidently sand or grind off the chassis number if you are not careful.... :errf: Nothing illegal about it if you notify them come registration time that the number was lost during restoration. As for grinding off chassis numbers, well that is way out of the realms of what I consider legit.
Two Tees, a mate of mine put a HZ wagon on a Landcruiser chassis and when he registered the car it was registered as a 1976 Landcruiser. Admittedly this was in Qld but as far as I know the same happens in NSW. I am not up with NSW registration laws though.......Absinth,

In support of Ozbox's argument I've seen an "Overlander" conversion done on a Patrol chassis. The vehicle was registered as a Nissan Patrol, no mention of Holden at all.
Gotta agree play! My van has a VIC police number on the engine but it's still My Sandman and I enjoy it for that!
And yes twotees I have been watching this thread for a while and am starting to get a little worried about the path it has taken in taking the gloss off Myles s find and his enthusiasm for what he clearly is passionate about!
Maybe blocker can shift the nitty gritty stuff to the appropriate thread that is When is a sandman not a sandman! (poss called something similar) and let Myles have this thread back!
Just sayin!![]()
i actually do not have an argument coz its fact so therefore no argument.:Tophat:.
education is what im doing here..educating the lurkers that read and dont post so they dont get caught paying big bucks for the wrong vehicle wether its a hq gts or a sandman...:(
all 2 t is doing is making it more interesting reading for the lurkers and educating them not to get caught out..
thats the one mate why else build a car, its there for the enjoyment of building something yourself, learning, and being able to go throughout the car/ute and tell someone exactly what youd done when they cant tell, cheers mate i can do a bit of painting, nothing flash but enough for the moment, my hq will never be for sale, even if it sits in the shed for 30years itll always be there, waiting, i think ive opened a big bag of worms here lol
