1600 first type is a GMH published figure. 1200 second type is what I understand it to be meaning 2800. Pretty close anyway.

Here are a few SS details that we have so far been able to work out.
They were all made in two batches.
August-September 1972 which carried in to October by at least 10 days.
1600 SS's were made in the first batch with
650 sent to New South Wales.
550 sent to Victoria.
180 sent to Queensland.
140 sent to South Australia.
80 sent to Western Australia.
November-December 1972.
1200 SS's made in the second batch.
With around 71 series 2's coming to WA
With a 2800 total production number.
2561 sold in 1972
239 sold in 1973
The first cars were finished 18th August 1972
Public relations release was August 23 1972
Initial deliveries to dealers in Victoria August 23 1972
First public showing at the Sydney Motor Show August 25 1972
National Advertising commenced September 1st 1972

There may have been 2800 SS,s made but as to how many are still left that looks to be in the hundreds not the thousands.

Note.
Not all of these cars still exist some are just tag details now.
2 cars counted here are not known as to what color they are so they do not show up in the color numbers.
There are known to be other SS's out there but we do not have details on them.
So I do not add these as the same car could end up being counted more than once if there are no details at all to verify it against
If you would like more information on the HQ SS's have a look here
