yeah i can help you out.. i have a 308 red hear running, good runner, all access, $1200.
also have a VN 5.0 (needs inlet and carb) and T700 good runner for $1500

Don't waste your time with a holden V8, put a 350 in it......then you can push a 2.78. i take it your in the wheatbelt and need a tall diff...

Buying a motor may seem cheap but then there's all the other stuff you'll need along the way which can really add up.
I have looked at doing that however i kinda want an old holden v8 to go with it... sounds better and i know them inside out haha

I meant buy a HZ/WB ute that has a V8/V8 Gearbox/V8 diff and transplant all that gear into your van. You can then put all your running gear in the other car and sell it off as a 6 cylinder. It's a much more economical way of doing things, and ensures that you have all the right bits. Not sure what the market is like over there but I've got half a dozen cars I've bought with good running v8's for $2k or under. Most have other goodies like GTS dash/steering wheels too.

the 308 red i have is a good runner, still in car. only coming out because 350 going in. chev pattern you will probably need 3.08 diff (2700 rpm in 1:1 top gear @ 100 kmh) or 2.78 (2400 rpm in top gear at 100 kmh).

playwme's idea makes very good sense too.
