Thread: good gearbox choice

    good gearbox choice

Two questions, would factory aircon fit in the engine bay with a 202 with triple sus? and what are some good 4 or 5 speed gearboxs (e.g. supra or m20) / diff combos for it. right now it just has the standard 202 and banjo diff with it. thanks for any ideas.

I'd just use a 390 4 barrell Holley. You don't really want triples with factory air? I assume you are talking HQ-WB here?

    Use an M20 4spd with a 3.08 or 3.36 diff. Don't use an M21 behind a 6cyl in a big heavy van - you'll hate it!

i dont have factory air yet, but i have a set of triple sus at home, i was just wondering if they would both fit in. and yes its in a hj van. what would maek an m21 so bad? and as there a huge a difference between a 3.08 and 3.36

M21 and XU-1 boxes are close ratio and would not suit a big heavy HQ van with a 6cyl especially one with a bigger cam and triples. They are bad enough behind a 253. The difference between 3.36 and 3.08 is about 8% less engine revs for the same speed in each gear assuming the same tyres and gearbox used for each diff.

W50 5sp Celica box goes really well behind a 6cyl Holden engine, try and get one with the cast iron housing. As for triple SU carbs... pfft.... great if you like spending time tuning them before every drive, I had them on a 186 HR back in the 80's.... best thing I ever did was remove them and fit twin Dellorto's. You'll still have to tune them but no where near as much as SU's.
