I hope you're right. I am really concerned now that I would not be able to rego my sandman when finished. I've had it since 98, it was last regoed 92ish. Back then I even tracked down an old owner who showed me photos (so I know old rego number) but no paperwork.
A mate had done a freedom of info search on his car a few years ago and got info from 1972, but when I recently tried the RTA said they are "systematically destroying all old records and they are up to 1999, so nothing exists anymore prior"
That is criminal destroying history like that.
Has anyone had a recent experience getting rego on a car that has been unreg for ages?
Steve
Hi there, yes Steve. about 3 months ago, 1 x Holden v8 van rego in SA, 7 years out of rego. ...Hand the money over and it's done. Aslong as no motor swaps or anything of that nature. Was very easy![]()
As for the ID plate discussion. I agree with wbute completely!Definately a risk having your personal info available on the internet, for all to see. I would not publish them, solely for theft concerns.
There is a big difference between personal security (sharing personal information) on the net and showing photos of ID plates.
I was asking the Q about uploading plate info rather than sharing your address, real name or other personal info.
For example I know a number of peoples ID plate info that have shared it here.. but I have no idea of their names or addresses. That data is not available on this website (hidden or public) unless you put it up here.
Surely it's a bigger risk driving on the road and having someone follow you home?
I'd say the green car tags are reproduction, nice and new with incorrect rivets. The mustard cars tags have original rivets and have been poorly masked when the car was repainted hence the odd looking shape.
You would have to be a complete idiot to copy the vin number of an existing car. Re-registering a car that has been out of ergo for a long period is easy.... You present the car for registration with roadworthy certificate and as long as the search they do on the chassis number and engine comes up clean your car gets registered.
All those other tag details including the vin number were not recorded until 1988 and even then it is only the vin and engine number.
When they record the colour of your car they don't look at the trim code ...... They look at the cars exterior and write what they see.
Both of those LJ Toranas are probably registered legally as they have different engine and chassis numbers which is all that is recorded by the RTA. Having the same vin means someone is trying to pass one of them off as an XU1. All that means is buyer beware if you are paying big bucks for collector car.
4/75 HJ XX7 Sandman Panelvan ... Persian Sand currently restoring
7/76 HX Monaro 4dr 308 4sp... Absinth Yellow and rusty as hell.. SOLD
3/77 HX Sandman Panelvan ... Absinth Yellow and rusty as hell .. SOLD
steve,i am a licenced dealer in nsw and the rta will register anything with a receipt from the seller.....as long as nothing comes up on there system as in stolen then away you go regardless of any prior information..you dont need old rego papers.
i have only ever had one vehicle that was a problem and that was a commodore that i had purchased without plates..the previous owner had not cancelled its rego so it was still registered..a bit of argument and a stat dec got them to cancel the rego and re register...
Thanks for clarifying that Ozbox, can rest a little easier. I did a police check and all that when I bought it, so its not stolen
Steve
Looking at the two Torana tags definetly a repro tag . Is it the same car painted a different colour ? As irrelevant of tag details both cars are Brisbane built.
Well I have your numbers

when I went down to the RTA in Jan to register the Yellow van, I had a blue slip, and an old victorian rego paper, (we never bothered to transfer the vic rego, just let it run out, and made sure we didnt get any fines through speed cameras) as we knew it would be stripped and in a shed for most of the time. Anyway they had no problem with anything until they looked at the engine number, they said where did the motor come from, I told him we had built it from scratch, so I then had to have some sort of proof of purchase of the block, and all the parts which went in it....all we had to have was a proof of purchase of the block and it was okay. (we got a stat declaration for this)
So bear in mind if you buy a block from a clearing sale, or old matey from a farm (which we did) have a receipt of some sort..
cheers

both cars have a paint tag,one has paint code for march17th and the other mustard both have JP motors with green one 1 number away from mustard one..green car adr tag does not match chassis, there is 6538 chassis number difference between both cars and yes both brisbane built, there is a company called $^@^*#!* spare parts in queensland that does repo tags for between 4k and 6k and does holden/fraud and valiants!!! but i was told that old tags were destroyed when remake is done, this seems to be not the case here, why mustard tags look so odd maybe due to some form of cleaning..coke or mild acid comes to mind, I dont like what $%^&*##$*) do as i must be breaking some law here....and my thoughts on posting tag info on the internet..iam ok with it as i have my tags with me and no one can take them of me unless i sell car, but this shows it is buyer beware and to do your home work on any purchases as iam sure the owner of green car reckons his is the real deal!!! not......
