I think there is a real risk of car identity theft in some limited situations. If for example a scammer has a stolen/non-ligit HJ van/ute/chassis and sees on this site that Mr X has taken his HJ Sandman rego XXX 777 (same model as stolen car) off the road for a full resto, or is laying it up unregistered for a while, takes the numbers, dodgies receipt (only need 1 written on a piece of paper for unreg car) RTA recoginise it as having legit numbers previously registered.

Bingo- scammer sells stolen car, disappears. Mr X tries to rereg car in a few years time and it is discovered that RTA have identical record. Their are now 2 victims, the unfortunate buyer and Mr X, whose cars will now be subjected to RTA investigation.

I can't see that ever happening. Why would you use a known number when you could make one up and never get caught!

A known number has a history, and history is what car collectors love the most. Dodgy seller could say he bought the vehicle in a state of semi restoration off a guy (show him a 3 year old build thread on a forum which tells the story of where the car has been the last 20 years, original photo's proving it's authenticity etc. Buyer doesn't realise that the vehicle is still sitting in a shed cause that guy had kids and the project stalled for a while.

I don't know the exact RTA (NSW) requirements, but my understanding is that when registering an unreg car it needs to match prior RTA records for them to register it, or you need to prove it was previously registered in NSW or another state by showing old rego papers for proof.

Obviously if you are a scammer, you are not going to have old rego papers, but if you can steal numbers off a recently de registered car it will still be on RTA system.

My brother had this happen when re-registering his wb after a couple of years out of rego. It showed up as being already registered in Victoria. Someone had access to rta records to find a number that suited their purposes.
I don't see the point of publishing anymore info than you need to. Only a fool tempts fate when it comes to the net.
Mock me if you like, I don't really give a rats. It sure does suck when your pride and joy disappears though. Been there, done that.

That cannot be right. My yellow GTS327 was last regoed in 1975. No records exist of it and the RTA cannot stop me from regoing it

I'm sorry but I'm with wbute here. Why tempt fate!! I know that it may never happen and why would they pick me, but I like a bit of anonymity. Not everyone's a friendly, honest, country person!!:shifty:
