    Sandman and sub cultures

When I was younger I only saw surfies driving Sandman's. Mainly because school and holidays were near surf beaches so that's what I was exposed to but I'm sure it was different for everyone else.

What 'group' in your younger days drove panno's or sports utes?

the cool group of course....Rodney used his to tow a ski boat, and sleep in the back instead of a tent...my other friends in Forbes just had vans as daily cruise vehicles...

    Update
When I was quite young around 9 I am guessing, we used to go away camping in our Kombi and alot of the time it meant driving up past the northern beaches as we lived in Ryde in those days, I still remember the vans being nosed in along the beaches, and the girls in their halterneck tops, and very high cork platforms. My father used to make some derogatory comment which I was probably not meant to hear, nor it eventuated, did I obey in the end...

my era was mid to late 90's when I was at school and started taking a liking to vans. surfers and tradies or combinations of both. I was kind of brain washed I the youngest of 5 kids my oldest brothers first car was a ford xb ish van (he was a cabnet maker) next brother down his first car was a WB van (surfer) then my sisters BF got a Sandman, sold his WB van to get it. so when It came my turn to get a first car... HJ sandman it was and still got it. Then Bec moved in and it wasn't long before she got her HX sandman, then my Dad got in and got a HJ 3 door ex ambo van. few years on everyone's moved out and I'm now the only one of the brothers with a van. Dad still has his ambo. Mum and Dads house used to be known as the panel van house.

my wifes uncle Still has his van he bought off the show room floor , and he used to put he's jet ski in it and tow boats with it ,, (wife and i even did a trip to perisher laying down in the back )
until we gave it a new lease on life,,(paint and interior fixup -no more wood) now its under he's house awaiting the right time to resuface, ( new parent )

Bought my first Van off Ozbox after going into he's yard to have a look at parts for my HQ premier, not that it need much , i was notoriously bad for just visiting for 3 hours most saturdays and having a chin wag and Learn ,,lots of learning

The.."Surfies"..had the van's of varying types and quality on the NSW coast, north & south of Sydney.
In Sydney's west were the show van's and cruiser's. When I used to ski, I was the only sandman in the group, most of the boat's were towed by car's or wagon's. This was during the 70's.

I grew up in the wheat belt of vic. long way from the beach. No surfies where I lived, but I was born in 1970 so was a little kid in the late 70s van craze era. I can remember being in the playground at primary school when a bloke with bell bottoms and a big mostauche pulled in to deliver something in his panel van. A few of us crowded around the back whan he opened it to get a box out. We were awestruck when we saw this velvety shag pile interior with a bar and a TV. It was like the coolest ever mobile lounge room. (We had no idea about the real purpose....) He was one cool dude and let us all look inside. He wasnt a surfer. I must have been about 8 years old. Its something I never forgot and I eventually did up one of my vans kind of like how I remembered it. No bar or TV though... Ha.
