Should have made this a pool poll.

It's not an investment question, I know the PITA they can be because of maintenance but the leisure, and having a 'base' for the kids and their mates is a massive plus.

We have a hot tub in our backyard. Alwaays war so we can use it all year round, even in winter. It is very relaxing to hop in after work, couple of beers. Good for about 6 adults even though it is meant to be an eight seater. Cost a fortune in electricity but stuff all on chemicals. Nothing to do as we have a salt one. It can sit for two months on its own and then off with the lid and in you go.

Hhaving said all that I would rather a pool. More fun to be had. I find it relaxing to be out in the yard clening it. Only problem is the actual use you can get out of it in melbourne. Not enough.

I would recomend a salt water swim spa sized pool conected to gas. Have amate with one. Heats up in a few hours so he can still use it at nights etc.

That is what an Australian back yard pool is all about...there is nothing nicer than the sound of happy kids splashing in our pool, now its our nephews turn as our kids have left...kids in pool, us sitting around it with drinks on a hot summer evening....can't beat it....

I still say don't do it......Big waste of half a day every weekend if there are trees anywhere nearby.

If you do it, try and cover the pool (eg retractable bubblewrap thingy), salt water, sand filter, self cleaning salt cell & controller and a decent skimmer box opening (or maybe 2 of them).

We put a pool in about 3 years ago....best thing we ever did. We are also surrounded by trees....they are in both neighbors yards and hang over our fence but we never get that many leaves that it becomes a problem. The pool is salt and has a cartridge filter....forget the sand filter...too much work. It's also hooked up to solar heating to get a bit more use out of it. As for maintenance...bugger all! We clean it probably 3 or 4 times a year and that's usually after a storm. We have a little vacuum unit that walks around the bottom of the pool that I call Julia.....it's always moving forward, has absolutley no set direction and it sux...big time. It's also connected to the WOW hose (Windsor Oakshot Wilkie) and cant move anywhere without it.
I'd be lucky to spend more than 1 hour a month looking after the pool....it's great.

You are one of the lucky ones. I know bugger all people who have put in pools and have not regretted it later. The only part of mine that wasn't high maintenance was the sand filter! It was the one thing that caused no headaches!

I thought the one joy of living in town was you could go and use someone else's pool?

We are thinking of putting one in also. Maintenance has me worried though.
