    Counterfeit Sandmans

Without naming names has anyone come across any fake/counterfeit Sandman in the past 12/24 months for sale online?

Do you think there has been an increase in purposely faking a Sandman or do you think people are still not educated enough to know the difference.

I've seen a few that people sort of "suggest" it is a Sandman when it is obviously not. But I haven't seen what you'd call a fake. Depends upon what you call a fake too. To me a car done properly using the right replacement body is still a Sandman. Only becomes a fake if say you start with a rustbucket like that white van on Ebay and restore it using a HX body.

i called about a ute that had been done as a mock sandman. the bloke said it 'might be a real sandman'. I asked him for the numbers and then informed him it wasnt and he started banging on about how it was a good ute anyways. I reckon its in our nature to be opportunistic. If a seller thinks he/she can pull the wool then chances are they will give it a spin

Will we ever see Sandmans become like the Monaro and Torana saga's? Meaning people knocking one up then flogging them off, not that they would fetch as much as their sporty cousins but opportunism is always a factor for some if there is a quick buck to be made.

I seen a ute in a panel beaters in Sydney that is destined to be a sandman and I suppose it won't be fake when they find the plates for it and I would be happier with this personally, if they change the chassis as well .so if you haven't got matching numbers then you have no idea of the origin of the vehicle . I am actually happier with a chassis change because an accident or cracked chassis rather than tag changes.

So if the body tags are correct and the chassis numbers are not....does this make it fake? *Assuming the tags are still as they were, when it left the factory*

I guess my point wasn't really clear. Do you think we will see the issues in counterfeiting Sandmans as the Torana and HK community have been subjected to? Considering it is so easy to do.

personally, if all the numbers dont match then i dont think it's worth anything mre than a replica

on the other hand if there was a choice between two exact vans where they looked exactly the same but one was an actual Sandman but the other was a perfect replica but half the price i know which way i would go

the expression is live the dream - not live the tags

simply yes, as one fo us has already said if there is a buck to be made then yep, regardless of make or model, if they can upsell a car to a rare model using a base model then yep

What i have done is buy a base model and rebuilt it, cost the same to restore but is rarer then the much sort after hot model, oh were talking minis here, i built a base model rather then ANOTHER FAKE Cooper S

as for sandys hell yeah there is and will always will be fakes, AGAIN some folk buy them not knowing there fake also, again over 40 years some folk get side tracked and not know the facts like so many of us, to them it could be just a car and be honest

There are 2 candidates on ebay currently that are destined to be fakes. The rusty white (Atlantis blue) HZ (Listing now removed by ebay??)and the XX7 HX Van (now a ute). I rang the guy with the HZ and he said with certainty that that shell can not be repaired. He is a panel beater. If those numbers turn up in the future then it will be a fake. If the HX turns up in the future as a van you can bet the farm it is a fake unless it comes with a well documented repair diary turning it back to a van by replacing the turret etc.

If they ever turn up as a re-shell and the authority finds out they will not be eligible for registration.
