Advice from LPG users

jeza,the hose is just a filler hose that was made to extract gas from car fuel tanks into gas bottles to use on my bbq..exactly the same as if you were getting your bbq bottle refilled.because i own a wrecking yard i had to be able to get the gas out to get rid of the old tanks...so its just a reversal of the hose from bbq bottle to drain back into gas tank of vehicle....has to be higher than car bottle to work properly...is not ohs compliant.

Ive run lpg for years on various cars from 3cyl 2 stroke susuki 4wd holden 6cyl landys, turbo 13b rotary mazda rx7, and my HZ 253 prem wagon.
There are good reasons to run lpg but for me the bottom line is $$$$$. Here in WA the price of gas has risen to the point where gas is not economical.
It was acceptable when lpg was 50% the price of petrol . But now its as high as 85% and in my experience can cost moor per k.
Yes it is a better fuel if the engine is properly built for it (high comp ignition re map cam good intake good exhaust etc etc).
Lpg like petrol is sold by volume and from memory lpg is 15% less dense than petrol and has a lower calorific value as well.
So when you buy 100l of petrol you would need to buy over 115l of lpg. and when you factor in all the other losses incurred when running a gas system on an older carby vehicle .For me gas is no longer a viable option.

Food for thought Nathan, this is the sort of thing I was wondering about. When you consider the conversion cost. Still wonderin though.

I have a 96 Landrover Discovery on dual fuel, at 16l/100km it was sending me broke, I always start the car on petrol as it is injected and the LPG has a long runner to the heads so it takes forever to start on gas. Switching from petrol to gas is instant but going from gas to petrol you have to wait for the gas to run out. I can't pick any difference in power between the two fuels, but at 3.9l hauling a 2.25 ton there isn't much power anyway, she sounds good but doesn't do much. When I had it converted, it only cost me $500.00 after the rebate so the cost has been low. I'm very happy with it even though the car is a bit fragile as a daily driver, it is now used as my tow vehicle as I travel to work by train and I have my VE for normal use. The tank is behind the rear seat and holds 110l, I didn't want the scuba tanks they put under the rear of the vehicle as they cut the petrol tank in half when they install it like that. If you are going to install lpg in an HZ van, I would recommend fitting the tank on the left side of the vehicle, opposte the exsisting petrol tank and having the filler at the back next to the tow bar. My father had this set up in his HZ van and it didn't require any body mods and the spare was in it's original location.
