    Are you serious!??!!

I thought id let everyone know that today i found out why sandmans are now an endangered species... they all got crushed!

While i was at a gents house getting a coupla parts he mentioned he once owned a wrecking yard. He said that he paid no more than $500 for a sandman van and after pulling out dash, steering wheel, buckets and console he would send them off to the crushers... GTS wheels and guards weren't worth stuffing around for and nor where doors and tailgates etc etc. Kinda brings a tear to my eye but helps to justify why they are now filthy rare and appreciated by many!

The beneficiaries were the always popular ute variant.

Reckons he could buy a factory 350 Stato for $2k and by the following weekend hed made 10K by wrecking it out. Also told me how he once got asked to go and pick up a blokes fact 308 prem because it broke down at the Zoo. He didnt want anything for it. The owner gave him strict instructions for a pick up before he got a parking ticket!

It doesn't surprise me, we couldn't sell ours for ages in 1987 and then let it go too cheap. How sad though, but at least the ones we are finding will have a good home for as long as we both shall live.....

$500 for a van back in the 70's would be right from memory, they were just like the holden's and ford's now. Years from now it will be the same, as certain car's become rare.

I remember mates had cars like chargers,HK/HQ monaros,GTR toranas as well as panels vans ( unsure if genuine ) and none of us had any money.
It's more than likely a big part of why they are so popular today, I mean we are all grown up and want to re-live all those good times as we march headlong into our midlife crisises.
Nah, I'm just driving around looking for someone with licence.

No different to the cars being wrecked now. Thats the way it goes. All the future Maloo restorers will be telling the same stories no doubt.
