    Wanted Sandman

If anyone knows of a decent windowless van for sale let me know (abncraig@e-wire.net.au). Kind of given up on finding one with original motor and box. On ebay there is a nice van with windows for 25k looks nice enough all matching numbers. Any one know anything about that dealer 7 8 2 motors? bit pricey for a van with windows I think anyway. Will keep looking haven't stopped the search after a year. And awesome website

Personally I reckon it's a pretty good buy. There are a few things not correct about it but it is a good looking restoration and I've heard these guys work is fairly good. You would be hard pressed to buy an unrestored van and restore it for less than the price they are asking. Windowed or windowless is a personal thing and if you don't like the windows you can always have them filled in, I don't think having windows devalues them that much... maybe a few grand less than a windowless if you really don't like windows.

This one apparently is all matching numbers with original engine..... a restored Mandarin Red HJ 253 4sp HJ Sandman sold early last year for just over $25000 and it had windows and a later blue motor, also had a few things not correct on it.

I believe Sandmans are undervalued at the moment, particularly vans and I think their value is only going to increase in the future.

no offense meant but I think you must be a sandman owner and not a buyer I think that is where the price difference is. I would love to think the value is 50k and I am a special guy at picking one up at 35k is a cheap and reasonable price but I think for this for van would have to be 17k max. maybe I am a dreamer and just trying to get a too big of a bargain.

No offence but you must be blind.... I never made any mention of 50k or 35k and the buy it now price on the HJ Sandman is 25k. Yes, I own a Sandman that I am currently restoring and it will owe me well over $25,000 when it's finished. I wouldn't by a restored one.

As for the yellow HJ being worth 17k max.... you are either young or you've never fully restored a car. A mostly complete genuine Sandman will cost at least $3000 unrestored, there will be at least 5 to 7 grand in panel work needed and a decent paint job will cost at least 7 grand so you are at around $15k and you still need interior, suspension, running gear etc. rebuilt/re-furbished.

Unless the seller is in dire straights and desperately needs the money.... what looks like a fully restored car for 17k is going to be a half arsed job done by amateurs.... have fun spending thousands of extra dollars rectifying their mistakes and bodgy workmanship.

Sorry my mistake, the HJ Sandman pictured below that sold last year for $25,000 was windowless.

It would be nearly impossible to purchase and restore a Sandman for under $20k Start adding a few GTS bits to any reto and the prices start to climb very quickly. Wheels and tyres alone would be hard to purchase and restore for under $1300.

Once you start the costs just keep accumulating. Unless you can do all the work yourself and thats a bit tricky when you talk about re-chroming ($350 for a bumper), re-upholstering ($700 for 2 seats) etc.

Its a good buy at $25 except for the windows. That can be fixed for about $5000 if you pay to get it done. More fun in doing it yourself though. I have only seen about 5 fully restored examples for sale in the past 3 years. None for under $25,000

abncraig maybe this is up your alley. http://tinyurl.com/ycgmwz4

It's been on ebay in my local trader. Had a chat with the guy and it's all genuine, requires a bit of work but would be a very nice example of a genuine HX Sandman.

    good luck.

I personally think that windows break it up a bit.
Both my vans have windows and think it adds a little bit of character to them.
The other thing is, do you want to have it so that it's properly restored or do you want to do some mods to it?

Windows were factory optional but a lot were put in aftermarket also. Are you after a restored van or are you open to restoring one.

If you are not much of a panel beater than an unrestored one is probably not a good idea unless you want to learn. I have seen quite a few good complete original vans come up but all needed some panel work, three have been totally original rust free cars but were farm vehicles and had a lot of panel damage.

I bid on this Aquarius 308 4sp original Sandman ex farm van on Ebay last year, the $8000+ winning bid was a bit more than I was prepared to pay at the time for a pretty knocked around car, just about every panel was damaged. Would have been an excellent restorer though.

i am with Ian on this one (SANDMANHZ).
entry level for a decent one without having to spend money would be $25K.

Ian emailed me every van that has been advertised in the last 2 years, before buying his Valencia van.

good ones are few and far between.
plenty of rustbuckets under $10k for sure...
