I picked up another HJ console now I'm down here in Melbourne. It was quite cheap on Ebay and turns out to be an original Chamois Sandman (no ashtray) console that has had a number done on it and painted black.
I got it home and realised the lid had the woodgrain plastic insert under the black paint so I proceeded to prise it off. I found that someone had stuck it over the original black vinyl coated metal insert.
The metal insert had been originally stuck down with silicone and was a bugger to prise off without bending the crap out of it.... patience payed off but I did scratch up the bright chrome finish of the lid. As it turns out I couldn't use it as a HQ GTS lid anyhow... someone at the factory has put a gasket or similar on the lid surface before spraying the chrome paint on it... interesting.... haven't seen that before.
You can see the red arrows pointing to some of the chrome paint stuck to the silicone on the back of the metal insert panel. I inspected this closely and it is definately a chrome paint that was sprayed on...
Hard to see in the picture but there is an overspray pattern around the side of the lid and on the hinges... I hadn't noticed this before but it is evident on all my original lids.
Lid and metal insert look much better now I have cleaned the glue and paint off. Pity about the small hole drilled in it though....
