Sandman stripes...What do they represent?

This might have always been obvious to a lot of others, but then maybe not. Maybe it's just my imagination anyway. I used to think as a youngster, that the later Sandman stripes were a subtle type of flame, and as I got older realised that it's actually a side view of a surfboard upsidedown.

So then what's with the earlier stripes?? Sand dunes?? Anyone??

Rodney feels that the Inspiration for the decals had a wave feel about both types of decals but he also thinks the later decals are nicer but that is his opinion, as he is a bit bias towards HZ’s. The later decals also may have had a Starsky and Hutch feel about them…..:lol:

australians do not realise how much styling for holdens was taken from pontiac....

another example of stripes on holdens..taken from the 69 gto judge for the lc gtr and the hg gts...theres lots of other stuff but if i start i could be goin for days.....

My point was a lot of people are coming to the forum not knowing we have a website, with info - even if some reference pics are second rate :D

Yeah I've seen those photo's etc, but The name and the decals must've had some bearing on each other. I'm sticking with the surfboard theory, the later stripes look too much like an upsidedown surfboard for it to be a coincidence.

Maybe it's supposed to be a wave rolling onto a beach? We'll never know because some graphic artist came up with it back in the 70's and they were probably too stoned to remember.

by 1974 panelvans were already embedded in the surf culture so the name as a package is or was really a no brainer...
