I can recall a similar experience with an XC fairmont station wagon when I was in an NRMA workshop years ago.....turned out this particular creature we were trying to find a cam & gear set for was an American Cleveland 351.....we had to wait months before a second-hand set was tracked down to get the car going again.
Furthermore with the 70's super cars decline, we must note that Holden, Ford and Chrysler were geared up for making their go fast packs but had to stop after Goof Witless's govt forced their hand, but were still under contractual obligations from part manufacturing firms that were supplying them at the time, so perhaps thats why they still persisted with model variants in many guises.....not just engines and drive lines but interior trims also.
