Restoration of headlight surrounds

Headlight surrounds what are the plated in? They are shiny but they don't look like chrome. I was thinking that they could be bright annodised?

AmbientGoat thinks that I'm being obsessive...

Btw I have seen the reproduction surrounds that are chrome plated steel. They don't look the goods though.

I think they are just polished alloy. That's what mine appear to be.

If you look really closely at one that's pitting there is defiantly a layer of something extra.

Maybe yours have been coated?
use autosol on it and see if it reacts.

Nope no reaction.. The layer can come off if scraped though as it has gone crusty.

I have 4 pairs of prem ones and they are all the same. I need to get to the bottom of this...

The original ones on my Sandman (HJ) are painted black. So it quite possible that they are painted.
