wb steering column split any fixes?

Just a couple of questions. after trying to get into a far to small car park at bunnings, no pwr str, i heard a bang in the steering,
the column started to move. on investigation i checked the column bolts, all tight, i then removed the steering cover below the ignition to find the collapsable part of the steering column had split near where iam asume the column auto and manuals gears run through, my question is can this be welded or do i have to find a whole new collapsable section, and also does it have to be a wb specific column because of the hazzard light switch.

    thanks very much very helpfull,
I think i will weld a ring around where mine has cracked as i work in an engineering workshop and make it much stronger than the original as mine has only cracked at the top near the pot.

I don't think they are meant to be stronger than original. i think they are meant to break in an accident. put some pics up a it may be clearer as to where the crack is.

Its right up the top where if its was 3 speed column bit is just near the hazzard lights, nothing to do with the crush bits for safety, they obviously only made one column for all, if they had made one for floor shift the big piece taken out of the top for the gears to run through wouldnt be there in turn making it much stronger.
no photos as its having the gearbox and front end bushes done at my mechanics at the moment.
