    FIFO mining work

I'm looking for a new job (career) after my redundancy package took affect last week.
There are a few guys here on the forums that are in the mining industry, and since it is booming, want to know what options I should look at.
Being that I've driven a desk for the past 12 years in project management and risk assessment plus more recently in integration work I don't know what options are available.

Cadia in Orange will train you on trucks and then if you are lucky you can do fly in fly out to Telfa in WA. But once you are trained you can swap to other mines and employers if the jobs are available.
There are plenty with more knowledge on the subject though so maybe they have some different/better ideas.

just get in any which way you can - cleaner if you have to.... then maybe

you could use your risk assessment experience to be a safety officer - you will need a cert 1V in OH/S

Blocker, I can possibly give you contacts for work at Olympic dam. They are BIG on risk assessment, love safety auditing and all that sort of stuff. With those quals you'll fit right in!

Working in the mines is something you will either love or hate, some can do it and some can't. I was at Lihir gold mine in PNG working 6 weeks on and 2 weeks off FIFO. 12hr days 7 days a week for 6 weeks and I was bored shitless, I was management only and standing around for 12hrs supervising others working was the longest most monotonous days I have ever had to endure at work. I lasted the 6 weeks and didn't return.

Having said that, working the mines in Australia could be a lot better, you will actually work and won't be restricted to the mine area only although you won't feel like much of a nightlife after a full days work. Back to the donga for a shower, up to the bar for a few beers then off to the mess for dinner, in bed by 9:00 pm for the 4:00am wake up the next morning.

    the pluses are:
You'll meet some interesting and diverse people
    The food is normally excellent
    The money is excellent

    The minuses:
Long hours for 4 to 6 weeks straight
Away from family and friends for 4 to 6 weeks at a time
The 2 weeks off ain't that great because all your mates and wife/girlfriend are at work and if you have kids they are at school on week days.

My fly in was actually 42 days and they fly out was 14 days so in reality you only get 12 days. I would fly out on the Monday and fly back in on the 2nd Sunday so i would have only got 1 full weekend and a second Saturday which really sucked.

If you can handle it, it's a great way to earn some big bucks fairly quickly.

Bloker I would think project management ,planning ,and risk assessment would open alot of doors in the mining industry in either health and safety or maintence planning and management .

Not just mining but construction (of mines and other projects). T4 (terminal 4) coal loader in Newcastle is just about to get underway, study first, followed closely by Engineering and early Construction. Olympic dam in SA is reportedly about to kickoff. There are some big mines in northern NSW coming up (Gunnedah basin), just to name a few.

Mate, I have been in mining in Qld for the last 20 odd years.
    Definately a love/hate thing.
Good money but mining camp life isn't great.
However it is what you make it.
I can pass on details of recruitment company's up this way if you like.
