we have ex. army guys here on site, and they have OHS quals to the max, but they are not recognised as much outside in civilian life unfortunately...

most of the industry is going toward 8:6 rosters now, and almost the standard. 4weeks on :1 off is a construction roster and really a young single mans game.

Lots of opportunitys Blocker, just comes down to choice of job type and location really. It's already been said, but turning up is the way to go. People start as a cleaner, and before the know it they're driving trucks etc. Having said that, with your experiance, with transferable skills, you could make a few calls and get a few leads. I'd be looking at the Mastermyne website and getting a contact number.
At the Rio Tinto coal mine I work at, which is under construction, they have half the development work, we have the other half. At our existing mine next door, they are backfilling our roles as we move to our new mine. Their shares have gone up substantially in the last couple of month (MYE), and they have work on NSW as well I believe. I know they fly people to our construction mine (mainly on sub contract - bigger money) from NZ and WA, SA isn't a stretch at all. Pretty much 7 on 7 off at the construction job, but the existing mine is a bit differant.
The thing about coal mining atm, particularly underground, is that you start doing whatever, and you end up doing pretty much whatever you want. If you're into safety etc, the ERZ controllers (Explosive risk zone controllers - Deputies in the old terminology) who controll the underground mining area's ( a couple of years exp and a bit of study ) are getting $300K to $450K depending on how they are structure and who they contract through. Even as employees's they get about $220K.
    Worth looking into.....!

Yea mate I am starting to see the very same thing - although I have worked with heavy machinery (mil spec) machinery is not the same as construction and mining
