    HJ Help Please

    Hi All,

I have been hanging around here for a while now, love the site but have had no reason to post as yet.
It started raining this arvo so I said to my son lets go for a drive and see what we can find, low and be hold 20 min from home we found a van in a paddock and had a quick look at the tags on it. All the front end and running gear have been removed along with seats and dash but it is still sitting on the chassis. The body is in really straight condition with virtually no rust except two decent holes through the floor where the seats sat. Can you please tell me a bit about it by the tags and what it may be worth please.

    xx7 in top right cnr
    hj8wm70
    363850b
    1890 60v
    568 15953

    9/75
    gvw 2200kg
    seating cap 2

    All help would be great!

    Thanks Seavan

The xx7 is telling you it is a acacia ridge (Brisbane built)sandman van. Does the chassis no. Match the tags it usually takes about 12 months to 2 year to find your first sandman this seem to easy
    2200 gvm is a xu3
The information on the skinny tag also helps confirm that the tag all line up
Also on the bottom of the tag that xx7 on it will tell you the original engine gearbox and diff combination

Get your butt back there and make an offer. If the chassis number matches the number on the plate (363850b) then you're all good to go. Buy a donor car that has a good v8 driveline and all the GTS bits and transfer across. If the body is as rust free as you say then you're already a couple grand ahead than if you bought a rusty body.

    Rodney,

On the tag that has xx7, at the bottom it has m20 gu4 what does that mean?

Nice one. Last of the 14.5cwt XX7's. In 10/75 the standard Sandman became XU3 but that is an XX7

Sorry to ask a thousand questions on this but what color would it have been, trim colour and what would it be worth? I know it is hard without looking at it but just a rough guess before I go and approach the owner. Looks like a fair project to take on, even if you swap everything over from a donor. Just trying to weigh up if it would be worth tackling or do I leave it for someone else to find another day!

Seavan, Tell me where so I can see it to gauge its value better. Haha.

Seriously, as someone said earlier, its worth more if it is still on the chassis that matches the tags, but I think they quoted the wrong number. The chassis number is stamped on the rail near the steering box and the same number should match the number on the plate that you got the seating capacity from. The origina lcolour is mandarin red and the interior Chamois and covert.

A rust free HJ Sandman shell without tags would be worth good $ especially if no side windows, maybe $2000+ for the shell. HJ Sandman van is a unique shell, unlike HX and HZ which are basically the same as a Kingswood van. Thus HJ Sandman van shells are very hard to find.

Nice colour combo too, and having tags and hopefully those match the (not crashed) chassis. But on the negative side it is only a 253.

Don't go silly on it though as it'll cost significant $ to get good panels, the right dash, seats etc before you look at paint. Add it all up and compare to a van ready to go like the HZ Bern was selling.
