So true ... if it's the right series van/ute car whatever in the right colour with the right options, goodies, wheels etc that someone is chasing then they will pay what it is worth to them.
I have a mate who has limited mechanical ability nor has time, space or know how to do a restoration. He recently bought a Sandman van for upward of $25K. For HIM it was everything he wanted, right colour, L31 M21, it looks and sounds good and he just puts the key in, drives it, and he's as happy as a pig in Sh!t. Someone else (like me) may have struggled to part with 20K for it because it wasn't their "cup of tea".

79 HZ Sandman XX7 Van Flamenco Red - out 'n' about cruzin'
so how much would alley cat, jade or invader be worth ?
I paid $28k for my fully restored 77 HZ XX7 ute almost 4 years ago. Some people shake their head at the price, some say it was a bargain, based obviously on the cost to get it to that standard. Bloke I bought it from paid $2k to his builder mate a couple of years earlier, who drove it as a work ute, and had bought it new. He told me it owed him mid $30'S, he didn't do any of the restore himself.
I'm fortunate enough to be a mining electrician, and have been investing for retirement since I was an apprentice. While I like tinkering with cars (have done up a couple of old landcruisers) I'm a bit time poor at the moment with kids and my rodeo hobby that people tell me I'm too old for (so I'm getting in as much as i can while I can) so taking on a restore at this point was/is not really an option.
SO..while I did manage to knock a bit off the asking price, paying the $28K and flying from Emerald in Central Qld to Canberra to drive it home didn't really phase me. It's about what it is, who want's it, and what they are prepared to pay, like anything really.
Just need white HZ van and 4 door GTS to go with it now, but just have these boarding school fees to get past first........

Yeah Mauser, that's it allright. He picked me up from the airport in a HQ ( I think ) wagon that he was playing around with. Seemed like a nice enough bloke.

Thanks WB. I like it. I had a mate from Goldbourn check it out for me before I flew down to pick it up, so I was confident I was on a winner. The colour combination definately is good.
I was actually looking for a HX, because I wasn't real keen on the spoiler, but the twin headlights and the spoiler have really grown on me, as they do when it's your own. My 12 yr old son loves it, so I'm keeping an eye out for a HX/HZ with GTS options to do a replica for him.

I would have to agree with Paddy on this subject I know that I paid $2-$3,000 more than I should have for my van and I've said this before. But it was what I wanted, a HZ with a 308 and 4speed Windowless Van. Yes I'll spend more on it than I'll ever get back. But not everythings about money and value. This is my relaxation from working 7 days a week and a twenty year dream. So what price do I put on that!!!
79 HZ XX7 308 Windowless Van . Driving with a big grin. A few little finishing touches required
