Les, I don't care if you make the 5mm thick wheel or not.... I just don't like seeing incorrect information given on the forum... The information given implies it is now illegal to have a 5mm thick steering wheel on anything other than a HQ.
what a government body or your legal team advises is irrelevant.... They are simply trying to cover yours or their own arse against a possible lawsuit in case the wheel is fitted to the wrong vehicle... Less risk to just produce a wheel that complies with today's standards....
the fact is.... Under the "motor vehicle standards act 1989" a vehicle must comply with all ADRs at the time of manufacture..... Not current ADRs... Only the ADRs (or that version of the ADR) in force at the time of manufacture of the vehicle..... These ADRs are stamped on the compliance plate of each vehicle.
"The Australian Design Rules (ADRs) are national standards for vehicle safety, anti-theft and emissions. The ADRs are generally performance based and cover issues such as occupant protection, structures, lighting, noise, engine exhaust emissions, braking and a range of miscellaneous items.
The current standards, the Third Edition ADRs, are administered by the Australian Government under the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989. The Act requires all road vehicles, whether they are newly manufactured in Australia or are imported as new or second hand vehicles, to comply with the relevant ADRs at the time of manufacture and supply to the Australian market. When a road vehicle is first used on Australian roads the relevant state or territory government’s legislation generally requires that it continue to comply with the relevant ADRs as at the time of manufacture."
^^^ could it be any clearer?

This 6/77 HX must comply with the ADRs stamped on its plate.... Not later ones.... Not current ones. The 5mm thick steering wheel was fitted to HQ, HJ, HX and HZ until 01/01/78 and obviously complied to ADR 10b on these vehicles at the time of manufacture. It is perfectly legal to fit a 5mm thick wheel to any of these vehicles built before Jan 78 because the 5mm thick wheel complied with ADR 10b at this time.. That is the law. Your legal team can advise differently but that doesn't change the law.
It is just luck that the HK/T/G sports steering wheel still complies with the current ADR 10. Wouldn't matter if they didn't, they complied at the time of manufacture of the vehicle.
Fortunately for me there are still good second hand 5mm sports steering wheels available and I managed to get a good one a couple of days ago for my HJ Sandman and I already have a good one for my HX.
As for the 4 sp shift knob.... I am in Brisbane for the next week and don't have my parts manuals with me but I am willing to bet that the part number will not be the same for HQ through to HZ.
HQ/HJ had the plain knob because the shift pattern was on the lid of the console..... You should know, you sell reproductions of these shift pattern decals.
HX/HZ shift knobs had the shift pattern engraved in the top of them because the console was different in these models... Again you should know this as you also sell reproductions of these!!!!
Late HZ used the WB/Commodore style shifter knob.
Three different knobs means three different part numbers I assume but can't check it at the moment. Either way your labelling is incorrect.
