    GTS Steering Wheels

How do you tell if a GTS steering wheel is a reproduction or genuine, I have a one which is 3mm and someone has told me they think it is a rares one?

They were 5mm in the earlier series cars, and there was a ADR change which meant they were 3mm in the later series cars(around HX onwards).
You can pick the rare spares ones from a few years ago easily. They don't even look close to correct.
You could buy new GTS steering wheels in the early 90's from places like Bumper to Bumper. These were exactly the same as a factory wheel.
Rare Spares have a new one out now. Havnt seen one yet to know what they are like.
Put a picture of it up so we can see it.

Personally i dont uonderstand the ADR change re the 5 and 3mm wheels.... People keep saying early cars had the 5mm wheels but i just sold a 5mm wheel dated stamped 8/2/77 part number was for an 8VD (SS or a9x)

What i dont get about the whole 5and 3mm question is..... How does de engineering something make it safer and why would the ADR rules body need to get involved...

I think it was supposed to be that in a crash the steering wheel collapsed and the steering column hits you in the chest instead of the whole wheel spreading the force across your shoulders, Irish logic or what.

So its better to be impaled by a steering column.... Irish logic ... Definatley....:boxing:

    --- Updated ---

Looking at your photos the wheel grip seems too fat for a standard wheel.... Im going to agree with your learned colleague and say its repro.... I will say however that i have been known to be wrong but only on days ending in Y. :tranquillity:

It is genuine I say. The rares ones are totally different around the "boss" area. The early 90's ones were exactly the same as Holden ones because they were made with the Holden dies.
Thinner spokes to allow it to bend I imagine, not break though.
Here is a link with a picture of the crap repro ones. You can see the "boss" is tapered unlike the GMH ones which are straight.

The new HZ steering wheel produced by Rare Spares is as per original, including the imperial size threads on all the screws. this means the caps, adaptors etc are all interchangeable with original ones.
Current ADR requirement is that the wheel spokes must conform to the required thickness and performance. These wheels are ADR approved. earlier HQ series had the thicker spokes.
Here are a couple of comments from restoration specialists."Had a look and feel of the new GTR/GTS/SLR/SS steering wheel at Rares Virginia yesterday, fantastic job, they are perfect."
"Got my brand new gts steering wheel yesterday in the mail from Rare Spares looks like a brand new genuine wheel. It has the 3 mm thick spokes like hx hz wb, not the 5 mm thick hq and hj, but you would be hard pushed to pick the differance between this wheel and an original other than it has zero wear." so my recommendation is that people look at the new wheels and will be then able to make a judgement.

That current ADR thing is rubbish. They made one wheel to meet the later ADR to save money on tooling is my take on it. The 5mm one still meets the ADR requirement for HQ series car. The thread n the screws has no effect on the caps fitting either. That ^^ looks like a thinly disguised add for rare spares to me.
