Looks like a very neat, clean Sandman interpretation that would make a great tow vehicle. Leave as is (i'd add U17 instruments and factory air) and enjoy. You wouldn't buy a body as good as this (if it is as good as reported) and build it for the starting price, even at $10-$11k. As it already has a bulletproof box for a tow car a VN-VSIII EFI conversion would be easy too (WB's convert slightly easier as they already have the right radiator and shroud for a VN-VSIII engine).

What sort of tow ratings can you get with the HQ-WB series ?

Bit cloudy as there was no ratings in those days, you have to look towards States rules. They will easily tow a 600kg car trailer with 1500kg Monaro though, done this plenty of times with a HQ-WB ute or tonner.

In NSW it was at one stage up to the maximum laden weight of the tow vehicle as long as the trailer had functioning brakes. Not sure on the other states rules but would have been similar back when they were produced. Nowadays I'm not sure whether or not this is still allowed but couldn't imagine it would have changed too much to not be able to get away with....
