Specifically how do we know it's not, you could argue either way.

If it's a real authentic Sandman we wont know, but it is commonly known as Mad Max's Sandman.

Cars of Mad Max website has first hand info from guys that worked on set and did car modifications for the film. Maybe worth trotting over there to find out.
