Not sure if they've been removed or not but being a Melbourne build HJ the ID plate carrying the body info should be painted as they were affixed before painting. I must admit I looked long and hard at it as the buff marks (and the alloy removed from the plate while it was cleaned) looked sus but explained easily enough. The dash is right (5+1 digit speedo) but not sure about the warning light next to it - trying to work out if it is a reflection or white lettering (which shouldn't be there on this model). The blinker stalk knob HK-G? and the console I'm not sold on as it could either be a seat seperator or a normal console cut down - looks to have carpet glued on the end of it? I'd be looking at evidence of a front console mount ever having been there in front of the gearstick and if there was evidence of a front seat sep mount having been cut out/off (they look the same as a rear console mount).
Have a look at the steering column in the engine bay to give you any clues about if it was ever a column shift and if there are any witness marks on the chassis attach points from where any of those linkages would have been bolted to it originally under the drivers feet.
Have to admit the body colour firewall, inner guards etc etc, don't do it for me. They just scream "PG13'ed with"..... A manual 253 ute with standard manifolds doesn't exactly scream drag race to me either as there are better engine/chassis combos out there that will hook-up better than a ute chassis/cart spring combo. Any sign of mini tubs?
I feel Vombil's $7K offer wasn't too far off the mark. His claim of it being "original" is laughable though....

Dave
