i just brought an Early HJ premier today, 10 / 1974 build.. low 2000's Melb build i think.
its radio is factory fitted and is the air chief style you see in HQ's with the rolling vertical dials
just wondering when they changed?

Whilst I'm not 100%, I thought HJ introduced the new style radios. The following GMH film for HJ Premier and LS Monaro models show the new style radio that we see for HX (white numbers) and HZ (yellow numbers). There are a number of films showing HJ models which also show the same model (not like th HQ).

Just an FYI, the above film was released in February 1975 so I'm guessing your Premier is a VERY early HJ.
it is, low 2000's melb build.

Wow that was good watching anyway, sorry dont know anything about radio haven't got one in the van!!!
I don't recall HQ style radios in any HJs when they were new. I understood they were HQ only.
Radios were usually dealer fitment unless standard, maybe they just used up old stock? Lots of HQ stuff is found on a 1974 HJ too, like engines, steering wheel, fuel tank etc.
wouldnt they have to hack the shit out of the HJ radio hole to fit that sucker... HQ radios were a unique size and no holes for the twiddly bits. To fit one to a new HJ you would of been better grabbing a Ferris unit.
