I don't think its illegal or unethical if, and only if you tell the authorities and the potential buyer. Its called a rebody. Thats all the good bits put on a different body and/or chassis.
Selling a car as a X when it is only the plates from said car, is illegal. Its fraud. There was a case in Australian Muscle Car resently where a car advertised and sold as something, was not infact as it should and it got ugly and ended in court.

Its a bit different when they are cutting out the chassis number and replacing it though, which is where this thread differs from the standard tag swap thread.

that is why I replied the way I did....nothing wrong with a re-body if the shell has rusted or been in an accident, in the day you would have done exactly that. In fact there is HX sandman which has a mismatching chassis in Parkes. It was done before the owner who bought it in 1978, and he had no idea until we read the tags for him...the guy knew it had been in an accident as it had a HZ front end on it, but didn't know they had slapped a different chassis under it...back then who cared about matching numbers...

I keep reporting tag selling on EBay to their "Report Item" option and they don't take them down.

They are illegal to sell and EBay has a policy of removing them but lately they have failed to do so.

who remembers this GTR scam from about 5 years ago on EBay. Looks like it is back on the scammers register. They are even using the same pics.

This is a scam. SCAM, in capitals

Bid $100K and see what happens.[COLOR="Silver"]

The term "Matching numbers" in respect to holdens is an often misused term.... In fact generally the only thing that you can match is the chassis to the compliance plate on holdens from about 1970 on.... Holden did not care about provenance or ensuring that the serial numbers on all major components matched....

For a true matching numbers car you would need to buy a (gulp) ford.....

On many Holdens and Toranas the PSN matches the BODY number too. But i've never thought that was what matching numbers meant. I always took it to mean all the stuff on the car is original ie plates and engine and chassis. It can only be proven with log books and sales receipts though.

Maybe we're missing the point here? This guy is not bring a car back or making a good one out of parts and falls foul of the law. He's selling plates and a section of the original chassis! There can be only one intention here. The original car is gone.
