Amazes me the miss-information surrounding GMP&A on the tags. Pretty common knowledge what it means in regards to a LX Torana! Big find indeed. Lucky bugger.

Stories around about them being acid dipped to lighten them etc. Just stories apparently though. They were modified to suit each race teams requirements in terms of
mounting points etc being added as needed. Basically a factory prepared race shell not intended for road use. I think around 25 or so hatchback shells were made. They all had the GMP&A on the tag. This being General Motors Parts and Accessories. Brocks 05 LX is an example of a GMP&A car.
They are possibly the "holy grail" when it comes to Toranas and Holdens in general. Not something you would expect to find under a tree in a paddock thats for sure.
I think a couple escaped race duties and did make it as road cars. Some of the race cars certainly were converted to road cars I believe.
A9X hatchbacks are the top of the heap in my book.

They are only worth really good $ if they are a GMP&A A9X race shell. If it was a GMP&A Sunbird shell then not so much!
I can't see the link to comment though as I stay away from Facebook like the plague, never been there, never will.
I always believed GMP&A bodies were actually a "part" when i worked at Coventry's in the GM dept ,you could buy these off the shelf,we had a Commodore body on the rack VK i think you could even buy engines in crates as a replacement part through GMH.
That is correct. GMP&A (GM Parts and Accessories) was the new name for Nasco, name changed in the mid 70's. You could buy a spare part body shell for any car. But the one that is the subject of this thread it is an SS A9X race shell as only they had MC7 against the transmission. MC7 is the gearbox code for the super duty boxes fitted to HQ GTS350 coupe, HQ XW8 Kingswood (both M20 Muncie) and A9X if optioned with a T10. You only ever see the code on the XW8 and the A9X as the MC7 box is optional on these two, it was standard on the HQ GTS350 coupe hence it is always blank on these.
Yes as byron says, the shells themselves were spare parts and not inherently special, but there was around 33 lightweight ones built specifically for racing. these are the valuable ones. Bloke I know in ballarat has a genuine ex bathurst car. I wont post pics of the car cos it has his name painted on the side as he races it in group C historics, but the plate looks like this:
