2 Tonner car carrier

Does anyone know if these are legal to make? I believe that most of the 2 tonners have a 2600kg rating. I get the impression the law will frown on these. But i have been told its ok to use for 'personal use' but not for a business......which doesnt make sense really.

Any thoughts?

Standard V8 1-tonner is 2660kg maximum weight, ie car and load. So it'll be probably another 500kg or so more than that for the lazy axle. So around 1500kg carrying capacity, which is OK for an LJ or whatever that ugly yellow thing is.

A Holden wreckers down here used to have an 8 wheeler with a tilt tray and powered by a big block. Wish I knew where that one was now.

As I understand it, existing registered vehicles are ok but trying to do something new is a pain. I reckon you have it right with the "not for business use".
How would one of those handle with a car sitting right up there? Personally, I'd look at getting a smallish jap truck chassis and then whack a tonner cab on it and repower with your choice of engine.

The biggest problem would be the length of a panelvan.....the tow cars tray would overhang far too much...rendering the project useless essentially!

Think the handling would be horrendous...could you imagine the body roll!!!! Dangerous to say the least. Agreed with getting a small jap truck route

You'd want to swap the aussie M22 4spd out for a trimatic though. I'd just use a V8 VK or VL box with 6cyl pump and bellhousing, or a VK EFI box. Wouldn't be hard as these CF's were optional with a trimatic so shift mechanism etc would be available from a wreck. You just have to build ap a ramped tray.

I would suggest the over hang on that top one tonner would be far too much to be legal. The other problem would be tyre loading and the wheel bearings would be on the limit. The chassis is also only designed to carry less than a tonne payload as well.
Its a cool idea, but anyone who has driven an over loaded truck would agree, that would be a pig to drive on the road.
Lazy axle also equals no traction at all on the slightest uneven surface, so going through a driveway and you are stranded as soon as the weight comes off the driving wheel.
Buy a truck, thats what they were designed to do.
