this may help as basically the prado is the same as the hilux, I tested at least 10 prados before finally buying one, they ranged from 2003-2009 V6 and diesel, I loved the power and performance of the V6 espiecally with the 5 speed auto, but ended up with the 2006 prado 3.0 turbo diesel manual, the auto 4 speed diesel is pathetic, but for the best re-sale, performance and cost effictive servicing i picked the last model before the d4d as the injectors need to be replcaed every 100,000klm at a cost of $4k and you only loose about 7-10kw with the old reliable mechanical injection(about $80 for an injector) Iam getting about 1500-1700klm per tank with the 3.0td and a mate has the V6 prado 6 speed manual, getting about 1100-1300klm per tank(180 litre standard tanks)
You really must test drive them all first i think and see if power is worth it.

Dave, this is the type of BS myths I was talking about! A V6 auto Hilux is the pick of the Hiluxes, BUT they do use between 2-4L/100kM more than a diesel. Having said that I know guys that buy them and other small diesels and use as much fuel as the V6 varieties as they are up them all day trying to drive them like the cars they are used to. One of my friend's D40 Navara manual is a case in point, it averages around 13L/100 as you have to push it to keep up with traffic. If you were slow and patient it would be heaps better.

In the end the Hilux diesels will have the best resale, and easiest to sell. I'd hesitate on buying a diesel auto though as the 4spd is not a good box, and I personally would buy a D4D manual before the V6 manual. Towing, yes others "claim" much more but try and do it, I reckon something will break, probably starting with the clutch. I wouldn't tow more than 2.25T with any of these. For me that is my 700kg car trailer and 1500kg Holden. If you buy a car at 12-18 months old you are better off with the V6 as they lose heaps of value in that time, whereas the sheep line up for the diesel varieties and it pushes up prices. The newer ones (MY2012) can to 2500kg too, 2011 are only 2250kg (this is SR5 4x4, not sure about others).

Go and drive them all is all I can suggest. And if you like the V6 variety, buy a low kM secondhand one.
