Yes. Sort of. Although in both cases I still wouldn't see that as being as good as a car with its original sheet metal, and from a collectibility point of view I'd see the rebody and the Rare Spares Lego set as being inferior.
Too much emphasis is put on the actual value of these cars. I prefer to enjoy them for what they are, and if I happen to make a few bucks from them that's just a nice positive side effect.

So what is different on a HJ sandman body say compared to a HX Kingswood with a full length roof lining from the factory??

Square hole in the firewall for the harness to go through for one.

What WB says is one. There is heaps of differences between a HX van body and a HJ van body, you'd never get away with that one!
Plus they differ between assembly plants.

This is a bit of a weird one and kinda related. But are WB pillers shorter than earlier models?

The sandmans dont have the id on the body so its id stays with the id tags and the chassis number.
Sorry Bobcat, this is incorrect. I bought a 1972 HQ ute and found out later it had a HX chassis. Still is registered on my papers as a 1972 HQ.

Bobcat is right. If you turned up for a blue slip in NSW with a 1972 HQ with a HX chassis it'd be registered as a HX. And it shouldn't pass a blue slip in NSW until it had HX emissions equipment and other relevant ADR's complied with (like amber blinkers etc).

Yup, that is correct NSW will base it on the Chassis number. HX chassis under a HQ body = HX
Same with engine, Put a blue/black motor in a HQ and you have to meet the ADR's of the blue/black engine.

That's not to say some dodgy things didn't get through. Like re-stamping numbers etc or confusing the girl at the DMT/RTA/TRMS counter!

When I replaced the passenger skirt on my 9/71 Bathurst Special XU-1 I wanted to weld in and retain the original chassis number and wasn't taking no for an answer.
I had to go to the NSW police with all documentation, fill out a stat dec and have the car and number inspected. The police wanted to add a police number. I said NO WAY. In the end they agreed to allow the original number and police documention stating it had been inspected, cleared and the reasons why.
