Unregistered Vehicle Permits

G'day all, I'm planning on having my HZ ute taken to a local workshop and I'm just wondering what kind of regulations the RTA has regarding the condition of a car when applying for an unregistered vehicle permit?

Evan your best option is to contact the authority office in your State. They will give you the correct information you need.

I just did this with my ute.. So here goes..

This applies to NSW (and other states that have the RTA.. Maybe ACT??)!!

To get an unregistered vehicle permit the car has to have a pink slip.. So if it has not been registered in a while, you cannot get a unregistered vehicle permit..

If it is going to the workshop to have a blueslip done, you can legally drive it to the nearest mechanic that does blue slips. If you get pulled over while driving it there, tell them that it is going for a blue slip and they should let you go if they know the laws.. Then once it is at the mechanic, it is illegal to move the car from the mechanics. So therefore you have to go to the RTA get the plates and register the car and then go back to the mechanics and fit the plates and rego label before the car can be driven.

The other option is to take it to the mechanics via a trailer..

Gee thats harsh. In vic its much simpler. You just have to give either a chassis or engine number to vicroads and they will give you a 7, 14 or 28 day permit. The car is supposed to be basically safe to drive but they dont check the car at all. Youre not supposed to drive it before or after dark, and youre meant to be using it in local areas to go get work done on it. Its pretty easy.

Make sure you book into the mechanics.
Have there name and number handy.
Because the cops will ask, and if they think something is dodge, they will call/visit the mechanic.

Matt, thank you that has basically confirmed for me that I won't be able to get an Unregistered Vehicle Permit, as the work I'm having it taken to the mechanics for is to sort some electrical gremlins in the headlights and front blinkers. Thanks for the info on blueslips as well, and Chrisp, I'll keep that tip in mind for when I take it for blueslip.

id have to agree with HK. you could hire a car trailer but then its your time carting and waiting etc. For near on the same cost as hiring a trailer and paying for fuel someone else will tow it on their time! Most towies LOVE cash
