Hi again. Orange Roughy has been cut up, raped. It is gone. I have pictures of the hood lining attatchment strip, trans turret, door jam lights, and many others. A couple of people from this site have seen them, and combined with the above tag info have assured me it's the real thing, or at least was.

I want to say i love this site, and the work some of you have done i cant fathom. I'm not having a go here, i love mysandman and spend hours on here learning but there are a couple of pieces of data in the HJ Indentification article at the beginning of this site which confuse the hell out of me and contradict themselves. I hope someone can untangle it for me.

1. Under HJ Identification. Firstly, i'm correct i think to assume we are trying to identify a HJ Sandman Van, genuine, the real deal? It clearly states the following at arrow point - MANUAL TRANS 4 SPEED. Then lower in the article, where the trans tag option is explained, it clearly states 4 different transmission options, including the trimatic and T400 Auto options. So my question is, did HJ Sandman vans only have the 4 speed fitted? If so, why are two auto options listed on the plate? If not, why then does it state at an arrow prompt 4 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION if auto was an option?

Two. GVM. Under the heading of GVM in the same HJ Identification article it states - ' 2200kg if built BETWEEN BEFORE middle 1975 because Holden did not introduce the derated GVW until later in the series'....... Between Before????
Sooooooo what do i make of that? BETWEEN the middle of 75 to 6/76......which kind of contradicts its self, or BEFORE the middle of 1975?

This leads me to a question. My Papaya van had every indication that it was a genuine Sandman. Two people whom have genuine HJ Sandmans have viewed the photos and tags and assure me it is identical to their vehicles and everything adds up. Has the correct trans turret mounts, head lining attatchment strip, every thing equates. BUT, it is 6/76 build, one of the very last......with GVM 2200kg. I don't understand.

Again, not having a go, love the site, your work is amazing and i'd love to buy you all a beer......just some of it is a bit confusing. I kept the tags naturally. I would just love to know if they are the real thing. Certainly not for monetry reasons but just to know i did once own a real Sandman.....or not.

Cheers.....Rockape

I am confused, why did you cut up a Sandman?
They had manual and auto, just no column shift option. They had the derated option which was just lower load rated sedan tyres.

Because it appeared it had been parked in a swimming pool, a salt water one at that, for two years. It was totally and utterly rooted. Everyone that saw it could not believe it. It was totally shagged. Your panel beater could have polished it out though i'm sure. Also, it had a HZ chassis under it. There's two reasons.
'They had a derated option' fine. But when? Between/before? Between before what? It makes totally and utterly no sense.

If they had manual AND AUTO then why, under the highlighted list of things to look for does it say MANUAL TRANSMISSION 4 SPEED?????? Makes no sense.

That means "if it's a manual it has to be 4 speed floor shift and not 3 speed" . It's just written in a confusing way Blocker.

Again, that bit just needs some proof reading and editing. The derated Gvm was introduced mid 75 , meaning that for later cars you can use the lower GVM to prove a Sandman. Earlier ones can't be determined from tags alone unless it's Brisbane built and stamped XX7.

Just had another look at the numbers you posted from the tags. Orange roughy was built in the last month of HJ production (6/76) and has the regular GVM. There's still the possibility of it being an XU3 Sandman (picture it as the "tradies special", all the Sandman stuff but with commercial tyres instead of passenger).
The interesting thing is the colour, Papaya. Far as I know that's a HX colour, and it wouldn't be unusual for Holden to release a few colours early. Just before the V2 Monaro was released we received a bunch of VX Executive rental cars in really loud colours. One hothouse green, one devil yellow, one vixen(?) red.

Given its 308 option and black interior then it could be a one off built to debut the HX at a motor show or something like that. Possibly a Holden employee did a special order when they saw the new HX colours. It's definitely not your ordinary panelvan.

Righto mate, as I havnt had the amazing pleasure of seeing your piece of crap panel van and I didnt know it had the wrong chassis, I assumed it was a bit of a stupid idea to cut it up. Next time you are after info do the research yourself instead of asking everyone else on here to do it for you. Use the search function.Good luck with it.

Yeah she was pretty rusty and un-loved for quite some time.
I gather even worse in reality.

Here are the photos that others either couldn't or be bothered to find.

Papaya is actually a HJ Holden and TX Gemini colour introduced on colour chart A626 in 3/76. It was also an LX Torana colour when colour chart A627 was released soon after the same month. These same HJ colours carried on into HX on clour chart A628 in 6/76 - this colour chart was identical to A626/7 except for the models listing on the rear.

I had a papaya HX, such a great colour

Rockie looks like you struck a chord when describing how you raped and maimed your 'sandman'

I carved up a rusty HZ wagon and felt guilty for a few days after. If you're bringing life to another van it's probably easier to justify
