My guess would be if you had anything in the back you would be a sitting duck for un-secured load. But it probably comes down to who pulls you over.

Dont think so many people i know just throw stuff in the back of utes and its ok as long as it doesnt fly out
its if you were carrying someone in the back of a van or ute for that matter would be a big no no
